About College

Government Engineering College, Barton Hill was established by the Government of Kerala in the academic year 1999-2000. Within a short span of time since inception, the college has achieved notable academic excellence. The college is affiliated to APJ Abdul kalam Kerala Technological University. It is under the administrative control of the Director of Technical Education, Government of Kerala.

Government Engineering College, Barton Hill located near PMG junction, in the heart of the Thiruvananthapuram city. Our college is situated at scenic hills of Barton hill; William Barton designed and built the new Secretariat building in Trivandrum, AD 1869, who was the chief engineer of Travancore. It was built based on Roman Architecture. Later it became the administration centre of Thiru – Kochi and then for whole Kerala. Barton Hill, which was the site of the bungalow of civil engineer Walthew Clarance Barton, who led the construction of the Secretariat, which he could see from the top of the 41-metre hill

The college is situated at scenic hills of Barton Hill and the land was donated by His Highness Sri.Chithira Thirunal Balarama Varma, the last ruling Maharaja of the princely State of Travancore. The college started its functioning in the month of November 1999 on the buildings of the Barton Hill Girl’s High School, Kunnukuzhy which is now defunct. The first principal of the college was Prof. G. Jayasankar.

Admission

Admission to the UG programmes to this college is done through the Centralized Allotment Process (CAP) based solely on the rank secured in the Common Entrance Examination (CEE) conducted by the Government of Kerala. This college is the choice of the top rank holders of the CEE. Admission to the PG programme is done through the Centralised Admission Process by the Directorate of Technical Education. All the students need to pay the fees only at the Government rate.

About CGPU

The Career Guidance & Placement Unit (CGPU) committee comprises of the Principal, the Coordinator, Faculty Members and Student representatives.

The raison d’etre of the Career Guidance and Placement Unit (CGPU) is the overall development of the individual student and providing a platform to launch their careers. Specifically, each student graduating from GECB should

  • Have a positive and winning attitude
  • Be a professional who is able to work synergistically as part of a team and collective
  • Be able to appreciate diverse perspectives, handle conflicts and form a balanced worldview
  • Have it in them to dedicate time and wholehearted effort to the task at hand

The Career Guidance and Placement Unit (CGPU) of the college actively organizes campus recruitments and training programmes for students. Our college has hosted some of the best and most trusted for campus placement. The institution being the choice of meritorious students in the state, employers have found it a major talent pool for students across branches.


The CGPU also focuses on developing industry-readiness in the students. Placement-oriented training as well as training programs on other technical and non-technical topics are organized on a regular basis. Continual motivation and support is provided for students interested in pursuing higher studies as well as for those aspiring to enter the Civil Services and other such careers.

Interaction with industry experts and alumni are facilitated and encouraged through on-campus sessions, networking opportunities, social media, and mentoring. The CGPU also plays a key role in developing a favorable ecosystem for nurturing startups and similar student ventures.



 NAME OF SCHOLARSHIP ELIGIBILITY
1 MERIT CUM MEANS Students belonging to notified minority communities viz. Muslim, Christian, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi (Zoroastrian) studying in India only and fulfilling the Scheme guidelines are eligible to apply for these scholarships.
2 CENTRAL SECTOR
Students who are above 80th percentile of successful candidates in the relevant.
Stream from a particular Board of Examination in Class XII. Not receiving any other scholarship.
Pursuing regular course.
Having family income of less than Rs.6 lakh per annum.
Not receiving any other scholarship.

3 PRE MATRIC SCHOLARSHIP FOR MINORITIES Students belonging to notified minority communities viz. Muslim, Christian, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi (Zoroastrian) studying in India only
4 POST MATRIC SCHOLARSHIP FOR MINORITIES Students belonging to notified minority communities viz. Muslim, Christian, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi (Zoroastrian) studying in India only
5 PRE MATRIC SCHOLARSHIP FOR STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES
A citizen of India.
A person with disability having not less than 40% disability and having a disability issued by any competent medical authority.
Not more than two disabled children of the same parents will be entitled to receive benefits of the scheme. Provided in case the second child is a twin, the scholarship under this scheme will be admissible to both the twins.
Scholarship for studying in any class will be available for only one year. If a student has to repeat a class, he/she would not get scholarship for that class for a second (or subsequent) year.
A scholarship holder under this scheme will not hold any other scholarship/stipend. If awarded any other scholarship/stipend, the student can exercise his/her option for either of the two scholarships/stipends, which is more beneficial to him/her and should inform the awarding authority through the Head of the Institution about the option made.

Should be a first year student of under graduate or post graduate course in Govt/ Aided colleges or university department.
Should have scored 50% or above in the qualifying examination.
Family Annual income should not exceed 1 lakh. For exemption of annual income based on merit.
8 DISTRICT MERIT SCHOLARSHIP Should have scored A+ in all subjects in the SSLC and Plus 2 examination. Conducted by board or public, Kerala state.
9 University Merit Scholarship
10 C H Muhammedkoya Scholarship
Should belongs to Muslim, Latin, Converted Christian community and should be a native of kerala.
Should be a girl student studying for the first year of Graduation / or Higher course in Govt./Aided institution.
Students who got admission to self financing colleges from merit seat are also eligible to apply for this scholarship.
Should have scored 50% or above in the qualifying examination.
Family annual income should not exceed 4.50 lakh.
Those who apply for hostel stipend should be staying in recognized hostels.

11 Snehapoorvam Scholarship Students whose father or mother expired.
12 E-Grantz Those who are in SC ,ST , OEC ,OBC ,FC category students.
13 Fisherman Scholarship Fisherman
14 J and K Scholarship Those who are admitted in the college unders PMSS Scheme.
15 PRAGATI SCHOLARSHIP The students admitted in 1st year through centralized admission process in AICTE approved Technical Institution for approved Diploma/Degree level Programmes are eligible to apply for the scholarship.
16 NON GATE SCHOLARSHIP Assistantship to Non –Gate- M.Tech students.

In any academic institution Library plays an important role in the dissemination of knowledge. In fact, the ambience of the library reflects the quality of the education imparted by the Government Engineering College ,Barton Hill (GECBH) Campus has recognized the importance of the academic vibrations required in the library and has been growing in this direction, right from its very inception. The current location of the Central Library is well planned. The well stacked racks are user friendly. A special zone has been carved out for the digital library. Our college was established and functioned in the academic year 1999-2000, with Central Technical library.


Hostel

We have a wonderful building at the corner of our college – Ladies Hostel , a secure home for the female students. This hostel is constructed in an Eco friendly manner to provide a green and fresh breath to its inmates. This is filled with 53 rooms which can accommodate 216 students including both M.Tech & B.Tech students.It provides an attractive shelter to the students, as it is adorned with spacious rooms, proper lighting facilities, study tables and required furnishings. Each of its 4 floors(including base) is lined with long verandas, which gifts you a sweet path due to an open quadrangle located at the center.

Besides being a shelter in terms of basic needs such as food, purified water, it provides extra facilities such as wifi – connectivity, indoor and outdoor game equipment, resources rich reading corners etc. It has a spacious mess hall which serves tasty and worthy dishes, run by a mess committee headed by the inmates itself. Charge of this mess committee is rounded twice a month so that every student can go through it


College Canteen

Our Canteen, an important part of college life, It tends to be the most popular place on campus, not only for physical refreshment but also for students chatting, gossiping, discussion and even work on assignments and projects.

The Canteen is a small building with a seating capacity of hundred members have separate area for the staff and students. A variety of refreshments and meals are available here.


College Bus 

The College has got three buses operating in three different routes to cater to the needs of students coming from different parts of Thiruvananthapuram city. The three routes together cover bus almost all important points within the city. Students can avail College bus facility by taking passes which are valid for one entire semester. Occasional users can travelin the buses by taking tickets costing Rs.10/- per journey. The three different routes of operation are

  1. College- Sasthamangalam- Vattiyoorkavu – PTP Nagar – Poojappura – Karamana- Eastfort – Bakery Junction – College
  2. College – Pattom – Kesavadasapuram – Paruthippara – Mannanthala – Peroorkada – Kowdiar – Marappalam – College
  3. CET – Sreekaryam – Ulloor – Medical College - Kannammoola – Pattor – Palayam – PMG – College

The bus operations are coordinated by the Bus Committee of the College. Prof.Ganesh.J,Asst.Professor in Mechanical Engg. is the present Bus Secretary who coordinates the bus operations.
