All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Patna was established to bridge regional disparities in healthcare services, medical education, and research. It was founded under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY) in the first phase, following the visionary announcement made by then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee during his Independence Day speech on 15 August 2003.

AIIMS Patna was among the six premier AIIMS institutions set up alongside those in Raipur, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Jodhpur, and Rishikesh, with the objective of expanding quality healthcare, advanced medical education, and research opportunities in underserved regions.The institute came into existence through an Ordinance dated 16 July 2012, followed by the AIIMS (Amendment) Act, 2012, which granted it autonomous status under the Government of India.

The first batches of MBBS and B.Sc. Nursing students were admitted in 2012, and outpatient and inpatient services began in mid-2013. Since then, AIIMS Patna has evolved into a national-level medical institution, currently offering 125 MBBS seats, 75 B.Sc. Nursing, 12 M.Sc. Admission Criteria

MBBS Admission 2025

AIIMS Patna offers MBBS at the undergraduate level with a duration of 5.5 years including one year of compulsory rotating internship. AIIMS Patna MBBS admission is based on a valid NEET UG score. The eligible candidates are then required to go through the NEET Counselling conducted by NTA.

MD/MS/DM/M.Ch Admission 2025

AIIMS Patna offers Doctor of Medicine (MD) and Master of Surgery (MS) courses at the postgraduate level for a duration of 3 years in 20 different specialisations. It also offers D.M. and M.Ch. courses at the super-speciality level with a duration of three years. Admission to AIIMS Patna's MD/MS/DM/M.Ch programs is based on the score in INI CET conducted by AIIMS Delhi, followed by counselling.

B.Sc. Nursing Admission 2025

All India Institute of Medical Sciences Patna, also offers B.Sc. (Hons.) Nursing at the undergraduate level for a duration of 4 years, with six months of compulsory internship. AIIMS conducts its own B.Sc. Nursing Entrance Exam for admission to the course.

Placement

The college offers a one-year compulsory internship after completing the 4.5-year MBBS program, with a stipend ranging from Rs. 22,000 to Rs. 30,000 per month. Post-internship, students can pursue Junior Residency or postgraduate studies, earning between Rs. 60,000 to Rs. 90,000 per month. Although there are no corporate placements due to the nature of the medical college, more than half of the students secure positions in the same hospital, with the highest package reported around Rs.50,000 for contractual roles. The AIIMS tag enhances future job prospects, and students often find employment in reputable hospitals nationwide. The college does not guarantee placements but prepares students for private practice or residency positions. Annually, approximately 6,000 students take the NEET PG or AIIMS PG entrance exams for further studies.
