Established in 1977, Aravind Eye Hospitals and Post Graduate Institute of Ophthalmology is a premier Institute located in Tamil Nadu.  The Mission of Aravind eye care system is to eliminate needless blindness at the national and international level.  The problem of rapid increase in the number of cases of avoidable blindness remained a major cause of concern in the Indian healthcare scenario.  Indian government alone cannot meet the health needs of all due to a number of challenges like growing population, inadequate infrastructure, low per capita income, aging population, diseases in epidemic proportions and illiteracy.  Realizing this, Dr. Venkataswamy established the GOVEL Trust under which Aravind Eye Hospitals were founded.

Aravind Eye Hospitals is located in Anna Nagar, Madurai, Tamil Nadu.  The Institute is affiliated to Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University, Chennai, and approved by the National Medical Commission (NMC), New Delhi.

Aravind Eye Hospital’s Postgraduate Institute of Ophthalmology is a premier institute for MS courses and is well known for its unique PG courses in Ophthalmology.  Its DNB and Post DO DNB are recognized by the Indian Medical Council and the National Board of Examinations in Ophthalmology.  International Council of Ophthalmology (ICO) examinations (Basic & Clinical Science assessment), Cambridge, UK are regularly conducted at Aravind.

Aravind Eye Hospitals and Post Graduate Institute is known for its unique Full Time PG Degree courses in Ophthalmology. The program is delivered by highly experienced and trained faculty for an annual intake of 20 students. Master of Surgery (MS) in Ophthalmology is a full-time three-year course offered by Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University, Chennai, and approved by the National Medical Commission (NMC).  The candidate must have passed MBBS from any recognized University and will be given admission on the basis of the NEET PG scores.

A well trained manpower is extremely important to impart training of the PG courses.  To this end, Aravind Eye Hospital has launched its Training Programs, PG Degree and Diploma courses, Fellowship programs, Paramedical Training & Administration and Hospital Management courses to develop a cadre of well-trained man power.
