Assam University, commonly known as AU, is a Central University located in Silchar, Assam. It was established in 1994 by an Act of Parliament (Assam University Act, 1989) under the Government of India. As a central institution, it is not founded by an individual or trust but functions under the Ministry of Education. Facilities Offered @ Assam University , Silchar

The library was started with the establishment of the University in the year 1994 as a central facility for meeting the information requirements of the academic community of the University. The Central Library of Assam University was shifted to its new permanent Central Library-cum-Computer Centre building in January 2006 and renamed as RABINDRA LIBRARY. The new building has a total plinth area of 38,700 sq.ft.

The University Health Centre, managed by experienced Medical personnel including Lady Medical Officer, supported by para-medical staff. The centre caters to the medical needs of the University community.The University has introduced Medical Insurance to each students. Besides these, health camps are frequently organised in the campus with specialist doctors from Silchar Medical College.

University is issuing Health Card to each student for the extending Medical facilities to the students efficiently. In case of emergency, ambulance service is also provided to transfer patients to Silchar Medical College, around 10 km from the campus. However, expenses related to medical emergencies and hospitalization shall be borne by the parents/guardians of the student concerned if not covered by the Insurance.

It is a centralized servicing centre for providing campus internet and intranet services; web services; mail services; database services; name resolution services; video conferencing services; etc. These ICT services are run on 24X7 basis in both the campuses of Assam University at Silchar and Diphu. The Centre maintains the University data for All India Survey in Higher Education portal.

Hostel

The hostel at Assam University offers basic amenities, including single and double rooms with beds, tables, chairs, cupboards, and shelving. Essential facilities like 24/7 electricity, Wi-Fi, water supply, and a generator are provided. There are five boys' hostels and six girls' hostels, but there is a shortage of seats, especially for first-year students. Hostel allocation is based on merit and distance from home, with an annual fee of approximately Rs.6,000 for general students. The food menu includes rice, chapati, dal, curry, and snacks, though the quality is often considered poor and repetitive, with meals provided twice daily. Students need to apply for hostel accommodation through a form. PGs and rented rooms are available near the campus, costing between Rs. 5,000 and Rs. 12,000 per month. The surrounding area is safe and offers basic amenities like shops and eateries.

Transport

The university provides internal transport facilities and has good connectivity to Silchar town through public transport, making daily commuting convenient for students and staff.
