Bharathidasan University established in February 1982, and was named after the great revolutionary Tamil Poet, Bharathidasan (1891-1964). The motto of the University "We will create a brave new world" has been framed from Bharathidasan's poetic words. The University endeavours to be true to such a vision by creating in the region a brave new world of academic innovation for social change.

The University's main Campus was initially located in a sprawling area of over 1000 acres in Palkalaiperur. However, as years passed on, the South Campus at Palkalaiperur with the available infrastructure was donated to the newly started Anna University of Technology. Very recently, another portion of the land has been allotted to the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Tiruchirappalli. Now the University has a sprawling area of 432.42 acres. Also, the University has a downtown campus at Khajamalai with a sprawling area of 39.99 acres, which housed originally the Autonomous Post-Graduate Centre of the University of Madras at Tiruchirappalli. In addition to the administrative complex, which includes the Vice-Chancellor's Secretariat, Registrar's Office, Finance and Examination offices, most of the academic departments and research laboratories are located in the main Palkalaiperur Campus. Among the academic units in the Palkalaiperur Campus are Schools of Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Life Sciences, Basic Medical Sciences, Geosciences, Social Sciences, Marine Sciences and the Schools of Languages. In addition, the Campus also has the Central Library, University Informatics Centre, Hostels, Staff Quarters, Health Centre, Canteen and others.

The downtown campus has the Departments of Social Work, Computer Science, Remote Sensing, Geology, Statistics, Women's Studies, Educational Technology, Lifelong Learning, the UGC-Human Resource Development Centre (Formerly UGC-Academic Staff College) and others. Besides these, the Bharathidasan Institute of Management popularly known as BIM (adjudged as one of the top business schools in the country) is located within the BHEL premises, a public sector undertaking at Tiruverumbur.

The University has totally 4 Faculties, 16 Schools, 39 Departments and 29 Specialized Research Centres. There are 263 faculty members catering to 2564 students and scholars in the University. The University Departments/Schools are offering 151 programmes including 40 PG programmes in M.A., M.Sc. and M.Tech. The above programmes are conducted under the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) in Semesters: 31 M.Phil., 33 Ph.D., 19 P.G. Diploma, 11 Diploma and 10 Certificates. The University's supporting staff strength is 457. In addition to the regular teaching programmes in the Departments and Schools, the University under its Distance Education mode is conducting 15 UG and 26 PG programmes. Admission Criteria

Admission for UG Programme

At UG level, the university offers B.P.Ed, B.Voc, BCA (Hearing Impairment) and Diploma courses in various specializations. The minimum eligibility criteria is 10+2 in the relevant subject group. Admission is offered on the basis of merit in 10+2. Students have to appear in the Proficiency Test and Fitness Test to secure admission in B.P.Ed.

Admission for PG Programme

BDU offers admission to full-time MBA and M.Tech courses in different streams for the duration of two years. Any graduate degree is required for MBA while BE/ B.Tech in the relevant discipline is mandatory for M.Tech program. The university also offers an integrated M.Tech program in various specializations. MBA admission is based on a valid score in TANCET/ GATE/ CAT/ MAT or GMAT. M.Tech admission is subject to marks in BE/ B.Tech.

At PG level, the university offers MA, M.Sc, MCA, MSW, M.Ed, MPA & M.Li.Sc courses in various specializations. Bachelor’s degree in the relevant discipline is the minimum eligibility criteria for admission. Admission is granted on the basis of marks in the last qualifying examination. The application form for Ph.D. can be filled by following the given steps:

The placement record of BU is favorable. The university’s website states that for the 2022–2023 academic year, the placement rate for PG (6-year) students was 63%, while for UG (3-year) students it was 45%. For PG (2-year) and PG (6-year) students, the median package was INR 2.40 LPA and INR 2.88 LPA, respectively. BU has a good placement record. BDU Placement Process

In the sixth semester of the undergraduate program and the fourth semester of the postgraduate program, respectively, the BDU placement process normally gets underway. To help students get ready for the placement process, the university’s Placement and Training Cell (PTC) hosts a number of courses and events. The PTC regularly extends invitations to other businesses and associations to hold recruitment drives on campus. Students can apply for the recruiting drive if they are interested in a specific business or group. Vehicular Parking Health and Wellbeing The University’s Health Centre was established in the year 1993. The Health Centre is located in a building with 300 sq.ft. area, which is very close to the Administrative Building, Hostels and to the Staff Quarters. The Health Centre has physical facilities such as bathroom, toilet, wash basins, fans, lights, drinking water, etc. The health centre has First-aid medicine, IRR Lamp, Electrocardiogram and other basic equipments. The working hours of the Health Centre is from 9.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m. The Centre has link with all the major hospitals in the city. The health centre has the following medical personnel.The average number of patients per day is around 40 including some poor villagers around the campus. Sports and Fitness

Bharathidasan University has an excellent infrastructure for sports and games. The sports infrastructure includes a good gymnasium with multi-gym facilities and yoga centre, an indoor stadium for table tennis, chess, carom, weight lifting and power lifting. The university trains students in the following outdoor games: Basket Ball, Ball Badminton, Cricket, Foot Ball, Hockey, kho-kho, Kabadi, Hand Ball and Net Ball. The University also has a standard 400 metre athletic track with the facility to conduct all the field events.

The University Informatics Centre has central computing laboratory for catering to the academic, research and general purpose computing needs of the students, faculty, and staff of our University. The Laboratory is also utilized by the students from constituent colleges, and affiliated colleges. The laboratory is also used for giving hands-on training programmes and webniars to participants of Refresher courses, Orientation courses, Short term courses, Workshops etc. The computing laboratory has 110 Computers connected to a central Server. The lab functions from 8 AM to 8 PM on all days except National Holidays. The Laboratory is equipped with Necessary Software Tools, IP Surveillance Cameras, Audio System and a Smart Board to teach and demonstrate.

BDU WiFi allows faculty, staff, students, and authenticated guests / visitors to access the network. The Wireless Internet (WiFi) facility has been provided to all the buildings located at both the campuses. A Wireless Controller has been installed to provide maximum WiFi coverage, authentication and security. With 75 access points, around 1500 authenticated Wifi users are connected to BDU wireless network. With a liberal grant from DST PURSE, both wired and wireless network infrastructure at our campus has been upgraded with state of the art equipments. Over 1500 users are currently utilizing the WiFi facility.

Transport

Transporation facilities for students, teachers and non-teaching staff are provided adequately. The University buses ply regularly between the city and the Palkalaiperur Campus in the morning and in the evening.
