Central Institute of Brackishwater Aquaculture (CIBA)
About
Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), New Delhi, under the Ministry of Agriculture, Government of India established the Central Institute of Brackishwater Aquaculture (CIBA) on 01st April1987. The Central Institute of Brackishwater Aquaculture serves as the nodal agency for the development of brackishwater aquaculture in the country. The Headquarters of the Institute is located at Santhome High Road, Raja Annamalai Puram, Chennai. A second experimental farming facility, which spreads around 64 acres in the Muttukadu backwaters, located at Kovalam has been added recently (22.05.2021) as expansion of the farming infrastructure. The Institute has two Research Centres, at Kakdwip in West Bengal in the east coast and at Navsari in Gujarat on the west coast of India. These centers' main objectives are to cater to the needs of aquaculture development with a regional perspective along the east and west coast of India.
The Central Institute of Brackishwater Aquaculture assists small aqua farmers in optimising their finfish and shrimp farming by providing suitable modern technologies. They also offer study courses and research facilities for students, farmers and entrepreneurs. CIBA regularly conducts farmers’ meet, trainings, exhibitions, workshops, and brainstorming sessions. Brackishwater resources are considered unique and ideal for aquaculture due to their biodiversity richness, high productivity, wide tolerance of fishes to water parameters, negligible footprint on potable water, and less carbon emission. Besides, brackishwater has a line-up of seafood choices in its farming basket, ranging from finfishes, shrimps, crabs, clams, mussels, oysters and seaweed of different feeding natures gastronomic values, with ready demand in both domestic and export markets. In addition to food production, brackishwater aquaculture can generate substantial employment opportunities in diversified fields across coastal India.
CIBA was formed, under ICAR, with a mandate to - (i) conduct research for development of techno-economically viable and sustainable culture systems for finfish and shellfish in brackish water, (ii) act as a repository of information on brackish water fishery resources with a systematic database, (iii) undertake transfer of technology through training, education and extension programmes and (iv) provide consultancy services.
The Institute provides latest failities which greatly help in managing the aquaculture industry. The Agricultural Knowledge Management Unit (AKMU) is an online connectivity platform for different research institutes, national centers and State Agricultural Universities. The also maintain databases on coastal aquaculture, provides advanced methods of communication and internet technologies and maintain and update the institute's web site.
CIBA's Engineering cell provides the support service for the institute to develop the infrastructure facilities for conducting R & D activities in brackishwater aquaculture in terms of construction of laboratories, hatcheries, office buildings, wet labs, feed mill, culture and broodstock and culture pond development, and its associated electrical and plumbing works including the regular maintenance works (both civil and electrical works) etc. Engineering cell is liaising with CPWD and other state departments such as local planning authority, environment department, revenue department and electricity authorities and metro water department for executing the works. It is also responsible for day to day activities of maintenance of R & D facilities and also for the adoption of modern construction technologies in the field of Aquaculture.
The Unit of Information Technology Management (UITM) envisages providing online interconnectivity between the different research institutes, national centers, State Agricultural Universities. The UITM center at this institute is involved in creation of databases on coastal aquaculture. The UITM also responsible for up-gradation of information technology facilities in the institute. This Cell envisages the adoption of advanced methods of communication and internet technologies This cell is responsible for the creation and content up-dating of the institute web site.
CIBA has an extensive library on various disciplines of aquaculture and fisheries such as shrimp and fish grow-out culture technology, hatchery technology, physiology, nutrition, biotechnology, genetics, pathology, aquaculture engineering, pollution, toxicology, socio-economics. The full-fledged library and e-resource centre hosts valuable referral books and journals in aquaculture, aquatic health, environment, bioinformatics and extension catering to the needs of scientists, research scholars, scientific personnel of other research organisations, academicians, university students and other stakeholders. The institute has three laboratories: Health laboratory, Nutrition laboratory and KRC laboratory for its various research programs.CIBA also maintain other facilities such as Hatchery, Trainees' Hostel, Auditorium and Conference hall with video conferencing.
ICAR-CIBA is at the forefront of cutting-edge research and technology backstopping for this dynamic sector. In the last 36 years, CIBA has made commendable progress by developing customized indigenous technologies for important aquaculture drivers, such as seed production and farming of diversified species, indigenous feeds, aquatic animal health solutions, climate-smart aquaculture, stock improvement strategies, community engagements and policy interventions through state and other Govt. agencies.
CIBA fosters responsible aquaculture that provides safe, sustainable seafood; creates employment and business opportunities in coastal communities; and complements CIBA’s comprehensive strategy for maintaining healthy and productive biological resources, ecosystems, and vibrant coastal communities. Fisheries being a state subject, to take the sector forward, partnership with institutions such as CIBA, State govt, Central govt, and other state and central agencies are imperative to construct the country's emerging blue economy.
