ICAR-Central Institute of Fisheries Education (CIFE) is a leading Fisheries University having a distinguished heritage and has nurtured many illustrious scholars and leaders over the years. In over 50 years of existence, CIFE has emerged as a centre of excellence for higher education in fisheries and allied disciplines. The Institute was established on 6th June 1961, under the Ministry of Agriculture, Govt. of India with assistance from FAO/UNDP. It came under the administrative control of Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) on 16th April 1979 and subsequently, the scope and mandate have been widened to include education, research and extension.

Recognizing the pivotal role played by CIFE in human resources development in fisheries, the institute was conferred the status of Deemed-to-be-University on 29th March 1989. Encouraged by the new status, the University grew by leaps and bounds. Building professional capabilities and competencies of more than 4000 State fisheries extension and development personnel since 1961, the emphasis has always been on quality education. Now CIFE is a knowledge powerhouse and a brand name in fisheries higher education.

From a modest beginning in 1961, CIFE is now located in a new campus with state-of-the-art facilities and is looking forward to the future with great optimism and excitement. As a leading university, CIFE seeks to innovate and adopt best practices in educational and research programmes that prepare students to be leaders in the respective domains. Candidates must possess a Bachelor’s Degree in Fisheries Science (B.F.Sc.) with a minimum of 60% marks under the 10+2+4 with system are eligible to apply for admission. Candidates having an overall grade point average (OGPA) of 6.50 out of 10.00 are considered eligible to apply in the concerned course.

Placements

CIFE provides the most suitable options for placement for its students in order to help them find an outstanding career in this area. While many students complete their P.hDs however, many students are employed in various fields after graduation from CIFE. Additionally, private firms like Avanti, Godrej, CP are on campus every the year to CIFE.

Additionally, students can be offered higher-level posts in various government positions. Students who would like to instruct in this field need to be eligible for the ICRA NET. Additionally, they may become professors at a universities for fisheries by obtaining this certificate.

The most common recruitments are in the state fisheries department. The agricultural scientist recruitment board takes the candidates for the scientists' posts once or twice a year. Also, they can be recruited as the assistant professor post in the state and central institutions.

Financial support is provided to the students who are meritorious in their relevant subjects and other scholarships under government schemes are also provided to them and also to the reserved category students of SC/ST/OBC and others as well.

CIFE Mumbai Facilities

The Institute is well equipped with all the latest technology to provide the efficient and effective techniques and training through the regular programmes.

Field centres and Farm Facilities: Under CIFE, there are four centres in all over India that all are well equipped with all the facilities and amenities to give them a high level of experiential entrepreneurship education and training related all the fields and to have a hands-on experience of all the work, farm facility is also provided to them from time to time.

Other educational facilities like classrooms and laboratories are well equipped with modern day technology and audio-visual aids. The college campus is providing Wi-Fi facilities for all the students and teachers who are working. They have a modern auditorium, conference hall, committee room that are equipped with the latest technology so that all the meetings , events, cultural events and seminars can be arranged well on time.

CIFE has two fishing vessels namely MFV Saraswati (OAL-36m) which is equipped with Global Positioning System (GPS), Very High Frequency Radio (VHFR), Radiotelephone (RP), Echo Sonar and Trawl eye and MFV Narmada (OAL-11m) so that they can support its on-board research and training programmes on fishing, navigation, oceanography and other such areas as well.

They have excellent facilities for supporting the physical development of the students like for sports and for other recreational activities like for international standard modern badminton courts, tennis, volleyball and basketball courts. Besides these, many indoor games facilities are also provided like for table tennis, chess, carom etc. They organise sports meets and other events as well to keep up the level of sporting level in the students and other staff members as well.

CIFE maintains a collection of a variety of fin fishes and shell fishes and other aquatic animals in an aquarium facility in the college.

2 boys’ hostels and 1 girl’s hostel, Staff residences and guest houses are also available for the students and staff members.

Laboratory facilities are very well arranged and equipped with all the tools and instruments that are important for the training and practical classes. It includes an Electron microscope laboratory, Zebrafish Breeding Facilities and Aquatic Radioecology Lab.
