CIPHET functions under ICAR and the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Government of India. It is an ISO 9001 2015 certified institution and serves as the headquarters for important All India Coordinated Research Projects related to post harvest engineering and agricultural plastic engineering. The institute undertakes research of national importance and provides technical and knowledge services in post harvest agriculture. It works with cereals pulses oilseeds fruits vegetables specialty crops and animal products.
The Ludhiana campus has four major divisions namely Agricultural Structures and Environmental Control Food Grains and Oilseeds Processing Automation and Sensor Technology and Transfer of Technology. The Horticultural Crop Processing Division is located at the Abohar regional station. These divisions have specialised laboratories research equipment pilot plants and technical facilities for conducting advanced research. CIPHET also coordinates research activities through its national network of cooperating centres under different research projects.
CIPHET is primarily a research and technology institute rather than a conventional degree college and therefore does not offer regular undergraduate or postgraduate degree programmes in the same manner as universities and colleges. Its major areas include post harvest engineering food processing agricultural structures storage preservation drying dehydration automation sensor technology packaging value addition and technology transfer. The institute conducts training programmes workshops demonstrations and skill development activities for farmers students researchers officers entrepreneurs and industry professionals. Eligibility varies according to the particular training or programme and scholarships are not generally offered as regular college scholarships.
The institute has extensive research infrastructure including specialised laboratories pilot plants analytical instruments an Agro Processing Centre Food Testing Laboratory and Post Harvest Machinery and Equipment Testing Centre. The Agro Processing Centre contains equipment for primary and secondary processing including cleaners separators mills oil expellers and millet processing equipment. It also has pilot facilities for products such as soybean and groundnut milk green chilli processing and spice grinding. These facilities are used for research training demonstrations and technology development.
CIPHET also provides facilities for trainees researchers and official visitors through guest houses and an International Training Centre. The guest houses provide basic accommodation facilities along with Wi Fi internet dining facilities and power backup. Sophisticated analytical instruments are available for farmers entrepreneurs industry owners students and researchers for research and testing purposes. These facilities support practical learning experimentation technology validation and development of new food processing and post harvest technologies.
As CIPHET is a research institute it does not have conventional college placement programmes for undergraduate or postgraduate students. Instead its work creates opportunities in agricultural research food processing post harvest technology equipment development technology transfer entrepreneurship and related industries. The institute has developed and transferred numerous technologies covering agricultural processing equipment storage systems food products packaging and value addition. Some technologies have been licensed or commercialised for use by entrepreneurs and other end users.
