Chennai Mathematical Institute is a centre of excellence for teaching and research in the mathematical sciences. It was founded in 1989 as a part of the SPIC Science Foundation, funded by the SPIC group in Chennai. Since 1996, it has been an autonomous institution.CMI is managed by a Governing Council consisting of eminent persons. Today, CMI is a rare example of public-private partnership in research and education in India. The Institute receives major private funding, side by side with substantial financial support from the Government of India.The main areas of research at CMI are Mathematics, Computer Science and Physics. In addition to a vibrant PhD programme, the Institute conducts BSc programmes in Mathematics and Computer Science as well as Mathematics and Physics, along with MSc programmes in Mathematics, Computer Science and Data Science.

Admission Procedure

Chennai Mathematical Institute (CMI) is a premier educational institution located in the famous SPIC IT Park. Being based in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu, it is a popular place for studying mathematical sciences for students from all over the country. Established in the year 1989, the institute is recognized both within the country and abroad. CMI provides undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programs under various branches. Admissions to the institute are done on the basis of the entrance exam.

Placement

CMI being a Research based Institute most of the students get offers to pursue their higher studies both in India and abroad. There are several other Universities such as – Chicago, Yale & Stanford in the US, Harvard, Cornell, Berkeley, IITs, IISCs, TIFR etc. involved in this programme.

According to the placement drive conducted in 2020-21, the average salary package offered by the top recruiters ranged between INR 16 LPA (CTC) and INR 25 LPA (CTC). The data regarding the placement drive for 2022 is still under process.Campus interviews are being conducted in CMI for several years now. Some of the major recruiters are Credit-Suisse, Ernst & Young, TRDDC, Adobe, Zen Drive, Teradata, Fresh Works. CMI admits around 50 B.Sc. students and 70 M.Sc. students every year. Following are the statistics for the past few years.

Campus Interview Procedure

After the initial contact, the company can send a job description, which is circulated among the students. If a reasonable number of students show interest within a week, the company will be informed. If necessary, we can collect CVs of interested candidates and send them beforehand. We typically give around one week time for the students to give us their latest CV. A date is then fixed for conducting the campus interview.

On the day of the campus interview, company representatives can give a pre-placement talk and conduct written tests and interviews. After we receive the list of selected candidates, we give one week time to convey acceptance of the offers. Following is the timeline for the first round of placements.

• By August, initial contact and job descriptions.
  
• By September, we will share profiles of interested candidates and companies can shortlist candidates.
  
• By October, campus interviews are conducted and final selections made.
  

Scholarships

The University offers a substantial number of scholarships consisting of a full waiver of the tuition fees. A limited number of fellowships will be available. The eligibility of a student to receive scholarships and fellowships will be reviewed every semester and will depend on satisfactory academic performance. Course wise Fellowships with a monthly allowance :

B.Sc. (Honors) Programs (Mathematics and Computer Science, Mathematics and Physics)- INR 5,000.
M.Sc. Programme in Mathematics- INR 6,000.
M.Sc. Programme in Computer Science- INR 6,000.

For students institute has facilities & infrastructure like Auditorium, Boys Hostel, Cafeteria, Girls Hostel, Gym, Hospital / Medical Facilities, Hostel, Labs, Library, Mandatory Hostel, Shuttle Service, Sports Complex, Wi-Fi Campus, Others - Playground, Volleyball Court, Table Tennis, Seminar Hall, Reprography/Scanning Center. Chennai Mathematical Institute Library is well stocked with the periodicals and journals. A detailed list of Journals available at the library is available online. For each journal, this list contains information about the specific volumes that are available. Apart from this, students may access information regarding the books available at the library. The library has RFID Technology.

CMI Chennai provides all the necessary facilities for the smooth functioning of the research work carried out by the research holders. CMI Chennai facilities are provided with transport facilities, medical facilities, and library facilities as and when needed by the students at the institute. The library at the campus is provided with a large number of books for the students to carry on the research work. Students are also provided with hostel accommodation for boys and girls. Transport facilities can be availed by the students to go out on a spree. Students are provided with a library at CMI Chennai where they can refer to multiple books in relation to the research work. There are various journals, newspapers, magazines, and other articles for the students to refer to.
