The Coimbatore Medical College

The Coimbatore Medical College is a government medical college recognized by the Medical Council of India.  The college was established in 1966 after Shri. G D Naidu, a Scientist from an industrial family of the city, donated the 153 acres of land to the Tamil Nadu state government under the Chief Minister K. Kamaraj.

The Coimbatore Medical College Hospital which is located on Trichy Road near Lanka Corner, about 1 kilometre from Coimbatore Junction, was established in 1909 during the British Raj.  When one looks at the history and time line of Coimbatore Medical College it goes back a long way to 1908 when the foundation stone was laid by Lord Ampthill, the then Governor of Madras,  who also inaugurated the hospital on 14 July 1909.  Later,  on 1 April 1912, the government of Madras Province took over the hospital administration from the municipality of Coimbatore.

The Golden Jubilee celebrations of district headquarters hospital, Coimbatore was inaugurated on 13 August 1959 by his Excellency Sri Bishnuram Medhi, Governor of Madras, and presided over by the Honourable Sri Manickavelu, Minister of Health and Revenue, Madras State.  

Finally, in 1966, The Coimbatore Medical College was started and three years later on 24 November 1969 The Directorate of Medical Education took over ithe administration of the hospital and renamed it as Coimbatore Medical College Hospital. The college celebrated its Centenary year during July 2009-June 2010.

The Coimbatore Medical College is located on Avinashi Road, one of the arterial roads in the city of Coimbatore,, Tamil Nadu, India and about 2 kilometres from Coimbatore International Airport. The college is just opposite Coimbatore Institute of Technology and near to The Jenney Club. This part of the city has a high concentration of colleges and hospitals.  The Government Medical College in Coimbatore campus has a vast area of about 160 Acres. This Government Medical College is a G+2 storied building. Constructed in 1966, the college has gone through many developments to get the present structure.

The Government Headquarters Hospital near the Coimbatore Railway Junction is attached to the Coimbatore Medical College and has been converted to a teaching medical institution. The college was affiliated to Madras University and was later transferred to Bharathiar University. Subsequently, it was affiliated to Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University.

The Coimbatore Medical College offers Preclinical Courses and Elective postings, the main course being MBBS. It offers courses in a variety of Streams viz., Anesthisia, Health Infomatics, Obstetrics, Surgery,Orthopaedics, Gastroenterology, Neurology, Biochemistry, Cardiology, Dermatology, E.N.T., Emergency Medicine, Forensic Medicine, General, Medicine, Microbiology, Ophthalmology, Pathology, Pediatrics and Pharmacology.  All courses offered by  the college are on a  Full Time mode.  The various courses offered and the admission eligibility criteria for each are as follows: 

MBBS - 12th with 50% + NEET
DM - Graduation + NEET SS
M.Ch - Graduation + NEET SS
M.D - Graduation + NEET PG
M.S - Graduation + NEET PG
PG Dip - Graduation + NEET PG
UG Dip - 12th
D.Pharma - 12th

The assessment methods in place are designed to test various domains of medical students such as knowledge, attitude, skills, etc. They include objective type exam, theory type exam, OSPE/OSCE assessment, practical exam and viva/voce assessments.

The college is equipped with highly modernised infrastructure and surplus faculty members to train and guide the medical students as per the norms of the Medical Council of India and the TN Dr MGR Medical University to which it is affiliated. The college offers to the medical students a structured training program including didactic lectures, group discussions, problem-based learning skills, demonstrations, hands-on sessions, seminars, symposiums, integrated teaching methods, etc. The college conducts a Medical Education Unit as per the norms of the Medical Council of India. The Medical Education Unit is constituted by expert faculty who are certified medical educationists and who are aware of latest technology and teaching methods in medical field. It aims to impart teaching skills into medical students so as to enable them become future teachers in medical field.

The Coimbatore Medical College offers a wide range of modern facilities for its students, faculty and general public (patients).  The various amenities provided by the college includes a Clean, Hygenic and Air conditioned Campus, 30 beautiful Departments, Top Infrastructure, Well-equiped, Digital Classrooms, Medical facilities, Hostels,  Laboratory facilities, Aesthetic Auditorium, Sports facilities, Gymnasium, Amphitheatre and other necessary Basic Amenties.  The well stocked library is situated in the College building.  Classrooms are well built as per MCI norms. There is a separate Auditorium. All facilities are made as per MCI norms.

The Coimbatore Medical College has an attached Government hospital which has been in existence from 1971, and has been providing dedicated care to patients. The hospital which had been run by Tamilnadu State Government has been taken over by the ESIC and is now being run as a 300 bedded hospital. The Govt. hospital has facilities for Outpatient clinics in a new building and Inpatient care of the primary Departments of General Medicine, General Surgery, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Paediatrics and other departments.  Other necessary facilities like X-Ray, Radiology, Scans, Lab  are also available.  The old hospital is  renovated and there is a new hospital complex also. The OPD and Casualty are situated in a new bloxk. An another hospital building has been added. The Operation Theatre and Modulate OT is situated in the new hospital.

Vision & Mission

Admission Process;

The admission process for MBBS is done on the basis of merit. Candidates must have passed the 10+2 examination or equivalent from a recognized board of education and possess a valid NEET rank to apply for admission.

NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test) is a national level entrance examination conducted for admissions into MBBS course offered by various participating institutions across India.

Placements: 

Government medical colleges don't officially provide placements after the course. All the students easily get a job after completing their degree as the demand for doctors is very high. The starting salary is about 40,000 per month. Students have the option to join government services or private hospitals.
