B.Sc - Cardio Pulmonary & Perfusion Care Technology

Overview:

B.Sc. Cardio Pulmonary Perfusion Care Technology (CPPCT) is a 3 year Undergraduate Allied Health Sciences program. Certain procedures require the Cardio-Thoracic surgeon to work on a Stopped Heart, and it is required to temporarily replace the patient's heart and lung function.  Perfusion Technology is a branch of science which deals with the study of physiology, pathology and associated equipment used to support and/or assume the function of the heart and/or lungs during medical procedures.

The Cardio- Thoracic surgeon needs to work on a Stopped Heart for certain surgeries and it is necessary to temporarily replace the patient's heart and lung function. It is the responsibility of the perfusionist (A candidate completing the B. Sc (Cardio Pulmonary Perfusion care Technology Course), a specialized healthcare professional, to assume the function of the heart and/or lungs during these surgical procedures.  Perfusion is defined as those functions necessary for the support, treatment, measurement, or supplementation of the cardiopulmonary and circulatory system of the patient.

A perfusion technologist prepares and operates a heart-lung machine, which is an artificial blood pump, and other sophisticated equipment as directed by healthcare physicians, to propel oxygenated blood to the patient's tissues while the surgeon operates on the heart.  The perfusionist manages the physiological and metabolic demands of the patient while the cardiac surgeon operates on the heart. It is also the perfusionist's responsibility to deliver the drug that stops the heart.

A perfusionist generally spends 90% of his or her time in the operation theatre for cardiac cases, but the responsibilities extending to the areas such as cardiovascular intensive care unit and catheterization laboratory.  The Perfusionist utilizes technology such as heart/lung machines, ventricular assist devices and artificial hearts, as well as pharmacological interventions to maintain the patient during the period of circulatory support.   Perfusionologist is a healthcare professional who controls the cardiopulmonary bypass machine during cardiac surgery and various kinds of other surgeries that requires Perfusionologist to have control of the patient's physiology status.

Why Choose B.Sc -Cardio Pulmonary & Perfusion Care Technology?

As a perfusionist, your job is not only to take care of the patient but to take care of their loved ones as well. Making the connection happen between a vulnerable patient and their family and friends is almost as important as the surgery itself.  And let’s not forget you will also be taking care of the surgeon to an extent. When the surgeon or surgeons have confidence in you, they can relax and just concentrate on the operation, which is where their focus needs to be in the first place.

Individuals with a strong background or interest in science and cardiovascular health might enjoy a career working as a perfusionist.  Perfusionists are an important part of a cardiovascular surgical team, maintaining the heart and lungs of patients during heart surgery.

Here’s the thing about perfusion: every case is serious. The very nature of its existence only allows it to be called upon when a patient needs a major surgery of some kind. Whether it’s an organ transplant, heart bypass or some other cardiac surgery, the patient’s life will at least partially be in your hands. Making sure a human being stays safe on the operating table and successfully pulls through all the way to recovery can be one of the most rewarding experiences of your life- and you get to do it again and again.

Moreover There’s A Huge Shortage: To give you a better idea of just how many people haven’t caught on to a perfusionist career yet, check out these stats. According to the 2017 annual report from abcp.org, less than 400 people took the perfusion certification exam last year. To put things into perspective, there are 245 million adults in the U.S., and around 90,000 of them take the MCAT every year. Less than 400 people feels pretty small right about now.

Two years ago, a sample was taken from 10 percent of active perfusionists in the field. The study revealed that nearly 50 percent were over 50 years old, and the industry doesn’t have nearly enough new graduates coming in. What does this mean? You should strike now while the iron is hot. Right now, perfusionists are more in-demand than ever. This means more job opportunities at a higher salary all across the country.

Not that the salary is every healthcare professional’s top priority, but the starting salary of a perfusionist, coupled with the relatively low cost of education may be enough to persuade you.  A bachelor of a B.Sc. in Cardiac perfusion technology is authorized to receive a higher pay scale as they rise in the ranks from any organization, they work receivable to practical experience related with the job. They draw up to INR 3 ,00,000 to 20,00,000 per annum.
