The Defence Institute of Advanced Technology, (DIAT) as it is known today, came into being as the Institute of Armament Studies in 1952 in the CME campus.
In 1967, the Institute was renamed as “Institute of Armament Technology, (IAT)”, which moved to its present location at Girinagar, Pune. From the relatively narrow scope of Armament Studies alone in the Fifties, the role of the Institute was considerably enlarged by the Defence R&D Council in 1964 and further in 1981.
On the basis of accreditation by the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE), Pune University recognised eight courses for the award of ME degree in 1980. In the year 2000, the Institute acquired the status of a Deemed to be University. IAT has been renamed as DIAT w.e.f. 1st April 2006.

DIAT Pune Admission Process
DIAT Pune offers admission to 34 postgraduate courses. Candidates can apply for admission to M.Tech, M.Sc. and P.G.D courses. For DIAT Pune M.Tech admissions, candidates have to appear for GATE followed by an interview. For DIAT Pune M.Sc. and P.G.D. programmes, the candidates have to only appear for an interview. The university offers 2 years full-time M.Tech programmes in Guided Missiles, Radar Communication, Artificial Intelligence and other areas. Admission is based on performance in the GATE examination.

DIAT Pune M.Tech. Admission Process
Candidates have to fill out an online application form which is available on the official website of the DIAT Pune.
Candidates who have gone through the GATE will be shortlisted on the basis of the scored marks for the next stage of the admission process i.e. interview.
The final admission to the university will be dependent on both performance, GATE with 80% weightage and an interview carrying 20% weightage followed by the seat allotments, document verification and lastly fee payment.
DIAT Pune P.G.D and M.Sc. Admission 2023
The university offers 2 years full-time M.Sc. programme in Food Technology and 1 year PG Diploma in Fire and Safety. Admission is based on performance in the interview conducted by the university.

DIAT Pune Placements
Defence Institute of Advanced Technology, Pune has a Centre for Training and Placement (CTP) to take care of the placement of students. DIAT Pune placement cell ensures that students are offered maximum placement opportunities every academic year. Along with placements, students are also offered summer internships. The CTP prepares students for the DIAT Pune placement drive by conducting seminars, guest lectures, aptitude training, soft skill and technical skill development and so on. As per the Defence Institute of Advanced Technology placement report 2021-22 (NIRF Report 2023), a total of 208 students from PG 2-years courses got placed in reputed organisations.

Defence Institute of Advanced Technology Scholarships and Funding
All Scholarship category students are eligible for scholarship of Rs.12, 400/- per month under DBT scheme of AICTE during the M. Tech. Course.
Contingency Grant: - M.Tech scholarship students would be also entitled for contingency grant. (Presently Rs.5000/- each year) in accordance with the decisions of the Institute. The unspent contingency grant will not be carry forward to next year.
