University of Delhi
About
University of Delhi (commonly referred to as DU) is a Central public university located in New Delhi, India. It was established in 1922 by an Act of the Central Legislative Assembly with a vision to provide world-class higher education and foster academic excellence across disciplines. DU was founded as a unitary teaching and residential university and, since inception, has aimed to create knowledgeable, socially responsible, and globally competent graduates.
The University’s core campuses are in North Campus and South Campus in New Delhi. The North Campus is centrally located near civil and cultural hubs, while the South Campus spans expansive grounds on Benito Juarez Marg, South Moti Bagh. DU collectively covers hundreds of acres, with North Campus around 69 acres and South Campus extending over approximately 250 acres, featuring academic blocks, libraries, research centres, hostels and sports facilities. The institution embraces a holistic and inclusive approach, blending rigorous academics with extracurricular development.
DU is recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and holds high national and international credibility. It has been accredited with top grades by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) (A++/A+), reflecting quality governance and academics. In the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2025, it ranked in the top tier among Indian universities, and it is ranked globally in the QS World University Rankings. These recognitions underscore its research impact, teaching quality and overall institutional excellence.
The University of Delhi comprises over 75 affiliated colleges and more than 80 academic departments spread across its campuses. Each college (like St. Stephen’s College, Sri Ram College of Commerce, Miranda House, and others) functions under DU’s academic umbrella. The university has 16 primary faculties, including Arts, Science, Commerce, Law, Management, Education, Technology, Social Sciences, and more, each offering varied specialised academic streams.
DU provides 500+ programs at undergraduate (UG), postgraduate (PG), diploma, certificate, and research (Ph.D.) levels across streams such as Arts, Commerce, Science, Law, Management, Education, and Applied Sciences. Admissions for most UG and PG programs are through CUET-UG and CUET-PG respectively; professional programs may require other tests like CAT, JEE Main, DUET or merit criteria followed by Centralised Seat Allocation System (CSAS). Scholarships are available (merit-based, need-based, and government-supported) to assist economically disadvantaged or high-achieving students.
DU’s infrastructure includes well-equipped lecture halls, modern laboratories, research centres, libraries, and digital learning facilities. On-campus amenities include hostels for both genders, sports complexes, health centres, student clubs, auditoriums, and incubation/entrepreneurship hubs that encourage innovation and student engagement. The campuses foster a vibrant academic and extracurricular environment with cultural fests, conferences, and inter-college events.
The University’s Central Placement Cell (CPC) coordinates campus recruitment drives across disciplines and provides career guidance, internships, and industry exposure. Placement statistics vary by college and program, but many students secure offers from major recruiters in sectors such as IT, consulting, finance and management. For example, several affiliated colleges report competitive average and highest packages, with numerous companies participating in on-campus drives.
In summary, the University of Delhi is one of India’s most prestigious and largest higher education institutions, offering diverse academic programs, strong research credentials, robust infrastructure, active placement facilitation, and extensive scholarship opportunities. Its century-long legacy, broad academic ecosystem and national and global recognitions make it a sought-after destination for students from across India and abroad.
