  With a perseption to bring about change and progress through education, the Tmt. Kannammal Educational Trust was constituted in 1985 and started Thai Moogambigai Polytechnic College.  Its Founder Chairman is Shri A.C. Shanmugam, former M.P. and M.L.A.  Within three years of its inception, Dr. M.G.R. Engineering College was founded in 1988, and the Thai CityMoogambigai Dental College was started in the year 1991.

  In the year 2003, both the colleges acquired Deemed University status in and became Dr. M.G.R. Educational and Research Institute as per the orders of the University Grants Commission, New Delhi and the Union Ministry of Human Resources and Development, Government of India, New Delhi.

 
  MGR University is located in a sprawling campus of 300 acres of land on Periyar E.V.R. High Road, (NH 4 Highway), Chennai, Tamil Nadu.  

 
  Dr MGRERI is an Autonomous, ISO Certified Institute which is recognized by UGC.  It is reviewed and recommended by statutory bodies, namely AICTE, DCI, MCI, INC, PCI, NCTE and BCI.  The Deemed University is accredited by NAAC with an ‘A’ Grade, NBA, NIRF, NABH, WASH, IAO, IQAC and ABET.  It has also been conferred University of the year award in India 2022.
