Dr M.G.R. Educational and Research Institute, popularly known as MGR University is a prestigious and well-known institute in Chennai. The Tmt. Kannammal Educational Trust was founded in 1985 with a vision to promote progress through education. Under the leadership of Shri A.C. Shanmugam, the Trust established Thai Moogambigai Polytechnic College, followed by Dr. M.G.R. Engineering College in 1988 and Thai Moogambigai Dental College in 1991. In 2003, both colleges were granted Deemed University status and became Dr. M.G.R. Educational and Research Institute, as per the University Grants Commission and the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India.

UG Admissions 2025

The Dr. M.G.R. Educational and Research Institute University offers a number of undergraduate degree courses, like B.Tech (regular, lateral entry and Part-time), BDS, B.Sc., BPT, B.Sc., B.Com, BBA, BCA, B.Ed and M.B.B.S. degrees with various specializations. The B.Tech course is offered as regular, lateral entry and part-time. Admission to all the UG courses at MGRERU are done through the entrance test conducted by the University itself for preparation of the merit list for different courses

PG Admissions 2025

Dr. M.G.R. Educational and Research Institute University also offers a number of postgraduate courses including MArch, MBA, MBA, MCA, MCA, MDS, MPT, M.Sc., MS (By Research) degrees under a number of specialisations.
Eligible candidates must appear for an entrance test conducted by the University, in order to get selected for the desired course. The preparation of the merit list for different courses is done based on the performance of the candidates in the qualifying examination and the results obtained by the candidates at the graduation level examination.

Application Process 2025

Dr MGR Educational and Research Institute grants admissions to all courses via an entrance test conducted by the University itself. The institute prepares separate merit lists for all programs available at the university. The application fee is INR 1600. Eligible candidates, if interested, may follow the steps given below.

Placement

DR MGR Educational and Research Institute Chennai Placement Report 2025 has not been released yet. According to the institute’s Overall NIRF Report 2025, a total of 583 students and 324 students were recruited from the UG 4-Years and UG 5-Years program, respectively, in 2024. The median package offered to students from the 4-Year UG program was INR 6.95 Lakhs, while INR 9.6 LPA was the median package for the 5-Year PG program. Some of the top recruiters were Hexaware, IBM, Deloitte, Cognizant, Accenture, Google, and Ford.

Rithik Royale, a BTech AI & DS student here reports that in 4th year i.e. in the 8th semester, students are eligible for placements. However, since the placement rate is very low, many students don’t hope to secure a job.

Scholarship

The college offers a range of scholarships primarily based on academic performance. Students achieving over 90% in their 12th exams can receive up to 80% off their fees. For the Computer Science and Engineering (Data Structure and Artificial Intelligence) branch, the annual fee is 120,000 INR, while for B.Com, it is 48,000 INR for shift A and 40,000 INR for shift B, with a late fee penalty of 2,000 INR.

Government scholarships are available for students from Bihar, while various merit-based and need-based scholarships are provided by the university for academic performance, including a 45% scholarship for some students. Loan facilities are generally arranged from external banks. Some students from middle-class backgrounds report having to pay the full fee without scholarship assistance. The college supports paid internships and offers campus placements, although financial aid directly from the college is limited.

Overall, the fee structure is considered reasonable compared to other institutions, with annual fees ranging from 40,000 INR to over 1,20,000 INR, depending on the course and duration.
