Banaras Hindu University (BHU), formerly known as Central Hindu College, is a central university in Varanasi, India. Established in 1916, BHU is the largest residential university in Asia and one of the oldest universities with the status of “Institutes of National Importance” by the UGC. BHU has been ranked 4th for Agriculture and 11th in the overall category by the NIRF 2024 Report. BHU comprises 2 campuses, 5 Institutes, 16 Faculties, and 135 departments offering more than 350 courses at UG, PG, and Research levels.

The university offers BSc, BBA, BA, BTech, and BCom undergraduate programs, while MA, MSc, MCom, MA, MBA, MCA, and MTech are postgraduate programs. BSc Hons is the flagship program of Banaras Hindu University. Admission to the BSc Hons is based on CUET UG (Common University Entrance Test). The overall BHU Cutoff marks for CUET UG for BSc Hons are 248 - 537 for the general category in 2024. The BSc Hons first-year fee is INR 30,000 - INR 50,000.

BHU Placement 2025 Report has not been released yet. However, according to the NIRF 2025 report, a total of 1,967 students were placed out of 11,441 students during the placement drive 2024. INR 16 LPA was offered as the median package to the students of the 5-year UG program. The top recruiters included IGraviton Research Capital, Rakuten, Microsoft, Google, Goldman Sachs, etc.

BHU Courses are offered at UG, PG, Doctorate level. There are 10 courses offered at BHU. The courses are offered disciplines like Medical, Agriculture, Science, Management. BHU courses includes BDS, MDS.

UG Admission Process

BHU admissions to most of the UG courses are based on the Common University Entrance Test (CUET UG), conducted by the NTA followed by counselling. Candidates appearing for the CUET must register on the BHU admission portal for counselling. Based on CUET UG scores, the university will release a merit list of shortlisted candidates for counselling. The seat allocation will be based on CUET UG scores, preference filled by candidates, availability of seats, and reservation criteria. BHU has classified UG courses covered under CUET as “General”, “Professional”, “Special Courses of Study” and “Vocational”.

PG Admission

BHU offers 2 and 3-year PG programs in streams like arts, science, commerce, management, medicine, law, education, physical education, social sciences, etc. Some of the PG courses are MDS , etc. PG courses at BHU are offered in the Faculty in the Main Campus (FMC), 2 other campuses, 4 associate colleges, and affiliated colleges. Admissions to PG courses are based on scores obtained in national-level tests such as NEET MDS, etc, followed by counselling.

Scholarship

Students of FDS, IMS BHU are eligible for various government and university-level scholarships including for SC/ST/OBC/EWS categories, merit-based financial aid, and need-based support. Being a government institution helps with access to these schemes.

Placement & Internship

After completing their academic course, BDS students undergo the required internship at the affiliated hospital, allowing them to develop clinical skills. While there isn’t a dedicated placement cell for dentistry at FDS, due to the reputation of BHU many graduates move into private practice, join hospitals, or pursue MDS/PG programmes.

BHU has three campuses, the main university campus, which is located on the southern edge of Varanasi. The main campus of BHU has the largest tertiary referral hospital in the region with a bed capacity of more than 900. There’s an archaeological museum on the campus which is best known for its collection of Indian paintings, but also includes archaeological artifacts, textiles and costumes, Indian philately, as well as literary and archival materials. The other campus, Rajiv Gandhi South Campus, is located in Barkachha in the Mirzapur district, about 60 km southwest of the main campus.

Hostel

Separate hostel facilities are available for male and female students on the BHU campus. Hostels provide necessary amenities like WiFi, mess facilities, recreation rooms and are maintained under university supervision. As part of the larger BHU infrastructure, students benefit from residential atmosphere, though some hostels may await upgrades.

Transport

The BHU campus is well-connected via road and public transport in Varanasi. Shuttle/transport services within campus and to hospital/hostel blocks are available. The integrated campus provides convenience for commuting and clinical postings.
