The Government Arts College (Autonomous), Coimbatore was established in the year 1852 by the British Government. This College is one of the best Government Institutions in Tamilnadu. Top beaurocrats, administrators, defence personnel and high profile politicians are alumni of this institution. It was conferred autonomous status in the year 1987.

In 2012, the college was re-accredited with ‘A’ Grade by NAAC. Admissions to the college is coveted by students due to the exceptional guidance offered by highly qualified teaching faculty. The ultimate aim of education is to make a person knowledgeable and well informed and offer him / her life skills so that one can earn one’s livelihood. In today’s world it would certainly be myopic to look at any educational programme purely from the job placement point of view. In the present scenario of economic turbulence an educational programme / College that would ensure a long term benefit such as sustainability rather than a short term promise of job placement should be chosen. As globalization has reached the education sector, the college has geared up to grab new opportunities, and thus the Tamilnadu State Higher Education Council has entered into collaborations with universities in U.K. These collaborations enable the college to offer students programme in U.K. Universities. So far, many post graduate students have completed the post graduation programme under the foreign study programme. The college also offers a unique Degree course in Defence Studies. A student can pursue this Degree course during Shift II. This Degree course will be a great advantage to all students who aspire for uniformed services.

The teachers use learner – centric teaching – learning methods to cater to the diversity in the aptitudes, intelligence, learning styles and interests of the students. They use non-traditional teaching methods and tools in ICT. Co-curricular and extra- curricular activities including sports are encouraged to ensure multi-dimensional personality development of the learners. Our college has consistently remaining among the Top 3 Government Colleges in Tamilnadu. Research scholars in all the departments are contributing research articles in reputed journals.

As per Government letter No. 4527/G1/2003, dated 17.10.2003, admission may be accorded purely on merit basis on production of Identity Card issued by the concerned HQ Tahsildars in respect of students seeking admission from Sri Lankan tamil refugee camp and those who were not enrolled in refugee camps may be admitted on production of VISA and Passport on merit basis. Original Certificates are to be produced at the time of admission only. However, if a candidate fails to produce the relevant certificates in original at the time of Counselling for admission, the admission shall be cancelled.

 Government Arts College (Autonomous), Coimbatore has steadily progressed over the years in enhancing the placement potential effectively by organizing campus recruitment inviting Multinational, National and Regional Organizations. The cell is headed by the Placement officer(s) and supported by the faculty members and student coordinators of all the departments. The placement office functions in a separate air conditioned hall with all the facilities for conducting Pre Placement Brief, Preliminary/ Screening test, Group Discussion and Interviews. Apart from campus placement, the cell also plays pivotal role in counseling and guiding the students of the college by organizing special lectures and soft skill programmes.

Hostel
Students Hostel (Men)
The college has a student hostel for men with mess for 250 students. There are 60 rooms with good ventilation in the hostel which has an area of 1 hec. 3931 sq.m. It has a library inside the premises for hostel students; it has dailies, weeklies, monthlies. Besides, it has broad playing area, in-door and out-door sports articles. It has a mess run by a canteen contractor, and the food rate per day is fixed by the hostel warden. Students can get admission form, fees details, and rules and regulations from hostel office.

Students Hostel (Women)
The college has a PG student hostel for women with mess for 50 students. It has good room with ventilation. 24 hours security is provided. Mess is run by contractor fixing rate per day. Daily attendance and conduct of students are maintained and supervised by the Hostel Warden (The Principal), and the Deputy Warden (Dr. P.S. Sujatha). Daily study hours is provided. Here organic vegetables cultivated by Eviro Club are used for food. Sports facility for womens’ welfare is also available.

Library

The library has a prominent role to play in supporting higher education to fulfill objectives of its institution. Students in higher education are to be provided with the facilities necessary for mastering the subject matter, techniques, skills, habits of thought, and methods of work in their chosen field. Classroom instructions alone will not provide all the opportunities needed for attaining all these complex educational objectives. It is here that libraries come to help students. The college library is a collection of sources, services and the building in which it is housed. It provides access to various resources in order to support teaching, learning and research activities.
