 The Government College of Engineering, Salem was founded in 1966 during the Third Plan period. It was the third Government engineering college to be established in Tamil Nadu and is one of the three institutions in Tamil Nadu offering Metallurgical Engineering as a full-time course.GCE-Salem is located on a beautiful 400 acre site surrounded by hills, along the  Bangalore Highway NH7, Salem, Tamil Nadu.

The institute is affiliated to Anna University which is a statewide centralized engineering university.  From the year of 2009, GCE Salem has been promoted as one of the Autonomous Engineering Colleges in Tamil Nadu.  All the undergraduate courses except Computer Science and Engineering are accredited by NBA.  The college has been accredited by NAAC with a "B" Grade. In addition, it has been recognized as a Research Centre under Anna University for Ph.D./MS courses.  It is an ISO 9001:2008 certified College.  Government College of Engineering Salem NIRF Ranking is 251-300 for B Tech.

 GCE Salem offers 6 UG Courses and 6 PG courses including B Tech and M Tech in numerous engineering specializations. However, only full-time study programs are available at the college.  TNEA Counselling is used as the basis for admission to the BE programs. The TANCET /GATE entrance exam scores determine admission to the M Tech programs. However, students must satisfy the necessary Government College of Engineering Salem cutoff scores.  The college is a Regional Centre for Anna University for Ph.D. and M.S. programs. It is the zonal office for the conduct of Anna University Examinations in the 21 colleges belonging to this Certification Type

All the departments have well-qualified faculty members and excellent infrastructural facilities. GCE, Salem was supported by World Bank Financial Assistance, TEQIP phase I to III. It is one of the participating institutions in Quality Enhancement in Engineering Education (QEEE) program offered by Department of Higher Education, MHRD, Government of India.  The college has excellent computer facilities with Internet Connectivity in all the departments. Admission to the institute is through single window counselling system of Anna University. Undergraduate students are selected based on competitive student rankings in higher secondary examination and then subjected to counselling.Postgraduate students are selected based on competitive rankings .

Government College of Engineering, Salem-11, was started during the Third Five year plan in the year 1966 and is located on a 162 hectares site surrounded by hills GCE,Salem was then the Third Engineering Institution in Tamil Nadu. Government College of Engineering, Salem

The Library of GCE, a house of books spreads over an area of 789.40 m2. There are eight active members including the librarian to maintain and have oversight of the process and services. It has a specialized collection of books, Journals, and other resources in sciences, Engineering, and technology. In addition, audio-visual information access facilities are provided. It holds a warm and comfortable environment that encourages study and intellectual growth. The library is well equipped with an ample number of tables and chairs. The racks are well partitioned as per the genres which hold 65099 numbers of books in total. It provides an easy way to fetch the required books.The Institution has a Digital Library to access e- Journals, e- books and NPTEL video lectures. For this purpose, a separate Library building has been constructed and 100 Computers with Internet facility have been provided to access the e-resources. A video conferencing hall is also been established with a seating capacity of 160. The College auditorium has a seating capacity of about 850. It is equipped with a 45 mm projector and a widescreen, which is utilized for screening pictures.
