The Government College of Technology, Coimbatore formerly known as Arthur Hope College of Technology, was established in July 1945. The College was renamed as the College of Technology and was affiliated to the University of Madras in 1951. Initially only Civil and Electrical Engineering branches were incepted at GCT in the year 1952. The main building was opened by Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, the then Vice President of India on 8th October 1959. Today GCT, Coimbatore is one of the leading Engineering Institutes located in Tamil Nadu. The college celebrated its Golden Jubilee in 1994-95 and has now completed over 78 fruitful years of excellence too.
GCT, Coimbatore has received the “BEST COLLEGE AWARD” in the year 2010 from Tamil Nadu State Government and “GREEN CAMPUS OF THE YEAR - 2013” award from Dr. Rangasamy, Chief Minister of Pondicherry for the measures taken on environmental activities both inside and outside the campus. In addition the Institute received a certificate from India Book of Records for the National symposium on Zero paper event.
GCT, Coimbatore offers a number of UG, PG and Doctoral programs in all major departments in both Full Time and Part Time modes. The institute provides BE/B.Tech full-time programs in 9 specializations, BE part-time programs in 4 specializations, ME courses in 11 specializations, and MS by Research program in 5 research areas. The College is a premier institute for B.E./B.Tech, M.E./M.Tech courses where candidate can pursue in multiple range of programs with the stream of Engineering. The Institute gives opportunity to students to gain proficiency & expertise in the specialization of Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics & Communication, Computer Science, Instrumentation Technology, Biotechnology, Information Technology, Production, Electronics, Environmental, Power Engineering, Structural Engineering, VLSI Design. These AICTE approved courses with 1324 seats are imparted at affordable fees, which increase accessibility and allow students the opportunity to gain knowledge and skills in their chosen field. To apply for undergraduate courses, the students can select the courses depending upon their score in the Higher Secondary Examination, conducted by the Department of Education, Tamil Nadu as well as TNEA entrance exam. For admission to postgraduate courses, the procedure is carried out through the single window system of Anna University, and candidates with valid GATE/ TANCET scores are eligible to apply. For the 3-5 years MS Research / PhD programs the eligibility is 50% aggregate marks or above in Master’s degree in relevant discipline from a recognized university and is based on Merit list prepared by Anna University.
All departments of GCT, Coimbatore have well qualified staff members and excellent infrastructural facilities. This Institute is supported by World Bank funding under TEQIP in the Phase II to the tune of Rs.12.5 Crores along with two Centres of Excellence, each granted with Rs. 5 crores
Student Research Foundation (SRF) was established to initiate Research and new product developments within the campus. Through SRF, innovative ideas from students are given funds and technical guidance required to develop them into full fledged products and solutions. GCT has strong tie-ups with different industries, R&D labs and Public Sector companies. The industrial experts interact on a continual basis to revise and revamp the curriculum and keep it modern and relevant to the industry expectations.
