The Government College of Technology, Coimbatore formerly known as Arthur Hope College of Technology, was established in July 1945. The College was renamed as the College of Technology and was affiliated to the University of Madras in 1951. Initially only Civil and Electrical Engineering branches were incepted at GCT in the year 1952. The main building was opened by Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, the then Vice President of India on 8th October 1959. Today GCT, Coimbatore is one of the leading Engineering Institutes located in Tamil Nadu. The college celebrated its Golden Jubilee in 1994-95 and has now completed over 78 fruitful years of excellence too.
GCT, Coimbatore has received the “BEST COLLEGE AWARD” in the year 2010 from Tamil Nadu State Government and “GREEN CAMPUS OF THE YEAR - 2013” award from Dr. Rangasamy, Chief Minister of Pondicherry for the measures taken on environmental activities both inside and outside the campus. In addition the Institute received a certificate from India Book of Records for the National symposium on Zero paper event.
Government College of Technology, Coimbatore is a state-funded university, affiliated with Anna University, Chennai. It has been ranked 104 in the Engineering category in the NIRF 2020 ranking. GCT Coimbatore is categorized as Band 'A' institute in the category of Govt. Colleges and Institutes. Courses offered by institute are recognized and acknowlegded by approving bodies like AICTE.
GCT, Coimbatore offers a number of UG, PG and Doctoral programs in all major departments in both Full Time and Part Time modes. The institute provides BE/B.Tech full-time programs in 9 specializations, BE part-time programs in 4 specializations, ME courses in 11 specializations, and MS by Research program in 5 research areas. To apply for undergraduate courses, the students can select the courses depending upon their score in the Higher Secondary Examination, conducted by the Department of Education, Tamil Nadu as well as TNEA entrance exam. For admission to postgraduate courses, the procedure is carried out through the single window system of Anna University, and candidates with valid GATE/ TANCET scores are eligible to apply. For the 3-5 years MS Research / PhD programs the eligibility is 50% aggregate marks or above in Master’s degree in relevant discipline from a recognized university and is based on Merit list prepared by Anna University.
All departments of GCT, Coimbatore have well qualified staff members and excellent infrastructural facilities. This Institute is supported by World Bank funding under TEQIP in the Phase II to the tune of Rs.12.5 Crores along with two Centres of Excellence, each granted with Rs. 5 crores.

GCT Coimbatore offers admission to its courses on the basis of merit and entrance examination. For GCT Coimbatore admission, candidates are required to appear for the entrance examination and have to achieve the marks required for admission to the college. Candidates can apply for GCT Coimbatore courses through the official website of the college. Candidates have to download the application form and fill out the application form with the required details through the official website of the college. Candidates then have to attach the documents required with the application form. GCT Coimbatore has a placement and training cell that offers placement opportunities to its students in various reputed companies. For GCT Coimbatore placements, the placement and training cell invites various companies to participate in the GCT Coimbatore placement drive. The companies then accept the invitation and share their details with the placement cell. The companies then visit the campus to conduct the placement process which includes pre-placement talk, written test, group discussion and personal interview. Candidates clearing the placement process are given an offer letter by the company. Candidates need to complete all the joining formalities and join the company by the date mentioned in the offer letter.

The placement cell sends the invitation to potential recruiters to participate in the GCT Coimbatore placement drive.
The companies interested shares their company profile with their remuneration and requirements.
The company and the placement cell mutually decide the date of the placement process.
The placement cell informs the students regarding the placement opportunity in the particular company and shares its details with them.
The placement process is conducted on the planned date.
The offer letters are given on the same day of the placements by the company through the placement cell.
GCT Coimbatore offers scholarships to students who require financial assistance. These students have low family annual income and have good academic performance. Candidates can check the eligibility criteria and apply for these scholarships through the official website of the college.
The hostel month will be from 20th of the preceding month to 19th of the current month (both days inclusive). The mess bill will be put up on the notice board by the first of the succeeding month. All hostel bills should be paid before the 19th of the month positively.
For late payment, a fine of Rs.50/-(rupees fifty only) will be collected upto 25th. Beyond 25th and upto the end of the month, a fine of Rs.100/-(rupees one hundred only) will be collected.
From the first of next month, the defaulted boarders will be expelled from the mess(not permitted to dine in the mess)till he/she clears the mess dues with fine. A readmission fee of Rs.200/-(rupees two hundred only) will be collected in addition to the mess bill and fine. If he/she is expelled three times he/she will not be permitted to stay in the hostel. Readmission is permitted only three times during the course. Preferential allotment will not be made hostel accommodation for frequent defaulters.
Hostel bill may be paid by account transfer through state bank of india (GCT branch,Coimbatore-641013,code no.2274) or through a demand draft drawn in favour of principal & warden, government college of technology hostel,G.C.T. campus, Coimbatore-641013 and it should be should be sent to the hostel superintendent,GCT hostels,Coimbatore-641013.
Cash,mail transfer, out station cheques and money orders will not be accepted. Payment can be made through any SBI group ATM from anywhere in india.
Government of india scholarship holders should apply for the scholarship within the prescribed time limit. The scholarship amount that is received from the government will be adjusted towards the mess dues. The scholarship amount will not be given to the candidate. The excees amount will be refunded only at the end of the course.
If any student discontinues from the hostel it will be intimated to the government.
Details of the mess bill will be displayed in the hostel office notice boards. Students should check the details and clear the dues within the dues date.
Bill particulars will also be given in the mess dues intimation card sent to the parent. Non receipt of the intimation cards should not be given as a reason for delay in payment.
Members should not demant any special service from the cooks or from other servants.
Reduction from the Mess
No reduction will be given for absence in the mess. Only on special cases reduction is permitted for valid reasons along with leave granted by the principal & warden / associate warden.
Reduction will be given effect 48 hours from the receipt of application under (n-3)rule.
The College is provided with a bus (60 seater) which is made available for use by the students and staff at prescribed rates and conditions on prior written application
