Government College of Engineering,  Thanjavur was started in the year 2013 by the Government of Tamil Nadu to cater for the needs of Technical Education in emerging areas of Engineering and Excellence in Research in different disciplines of science and engineering. The Tamil Nadu Government has created adequate infrastructural facilities and sufficient funds and is keen on developing the institute for higher education. 

The college is located on 35.73 acres of lush green environment.  It is situated 25 km from Tanjore (Thanjavur) and 35 km from Trichy, on the Sengipatti - Gandharvakottai Main Road. The Institute has been built completely for 31046.8 sq feet at the cost of 49.38 croresGovernment College of Engineering, Thanjavur is approved by AICTE, New Delhi and is accredited by UGC, New Delhi.   This college is a recognized research centre of Anna University, Chennai.

All the departments of GCE, Thanjavur have well-qualified faculty members and excellent infrastructural facilities. 300 students have been admitted every year through Tamil Nadu Engineering Admission - TNEA by the Directorate of Technical Education. 30 students have been admitted every year through Lateral Entry Direct Second Year B.E admissions.  The college is also one of the TNEA Facilitation Centres (TFC 38). Currently,  there are also students who are pursuing their Ph.D program.

The college has a strength of 78 faculty members (45 Doctorates), 46 Technical staff, 43 Administrative Staff, 10 Basic Servants.   The Institution has 30 Smart Classrooms, an I-Studio for online lecture creation, Video broadcasting system, Digital class room,6 Seminar Halls, 60 laboratories, and a separate Workshop.  Apart from this the college offers a plethora of facilities which include, Administrative Building, Auditorium, Chozha Boys Hostel, Ponni Girls Hostel, Principal Quarters, Guest House, Sports Complex coupled with a Gymnasium, Play Ground and Indoor Stadium,  Library, on-the-clock Medical assistance, Cafeteria and fully- equipped modern Laboratories. Admission Procedure

Government College of Engineering, Thanjavur admissions 2025 are entrance based. Government College of Engineering, Thanjavur offers 4 years B.E. / B.Tech in 5 specialisations. The course is offered in Full Time mode. Admission is entrance based. The accepted entrance exam includes TNEA, CBSE 12th, and Tamilnadu 12th.
