Government Erode Medical College & Hospital (GEMCH), Perundurai founded in 1992, was formerly known as IRT Perundurai Medical College.
The Medical College has, in fact, a long history. In 1930 Lord Willington (then Viceroy of India) start a tuberculosis sanatorium in Perundurai near Erode. The foundation stone was laid by Sir K.V.Reddy Naidu on 1 July 1936. The sanatorium was declared open by Sri.C.Rajagopalachari in 1939 which was renamed Ramalingam Tuberculosis Sanatorium (RTS) in 1952. In 1986, the government of Tamil Nadu attached a medical college with the sanatorium under the aegis of Institute of Road Transport. The college has 600 beds and started functioning in 1992. Later the Doctors’ quarters and a Nursing School were added In 2004 and 2008 respectively in RTS Hospital premises. And in 2017, the strength of the Medical College was increased from 60 to 100 students intake.
In 2019, Government of Tamil Nadu took over the college and renamed it as Government IRT Perundurai Medical College. During the 2020 corona virus pandemic in Tamil Nadu, the Government again renamed the college as Erode Medical College and notified this facility as a designated facility for treating COVID-19 cases in Erode district. During this transfer, out of the total 308.5 acre total land area, 208 acres has been transferred to the Health & Family welfare department and 0.99 acres to local Panchayat and another 3.9 acres for the formation of public road and the remaining 96.5acres of land has been retained by the Institute of Road Transport itself.
The Government Erode Medical College & Hospital, Perundurai is located in Kunnathur Rd, Perundurai, Tamil Nadu off Salem-Kochi National Highway 544 near Perundurai in Erode. The state of an art college with huge 327.66 Acres campus also has hostel facility within the perimeter. The college buildings are built on more than 16,000 sq with separate blocks of hostel and residential buildings and hospital buildings, including the OPD block available on over 25,000 sq. The college was originally established under Institute of Road and Transport by the TN State Transport Corporation. It is located 20 km from Erode Central Bus Terminus and Erode Junction railway station.
GEMCH, Perundurai is affiliated to The Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University and is recognized by National Medical Council (NMC).
Government Erode Medical College Courses are quality medical programs under highly qualified faculty and state-of-the-art infrastructure. It offers an undergraduate medical program leading to an MBBS degree of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery. The GEMCH, Perundurai has been approved for 100 seats for MBBS intake, and accepts students through All India Counselling 2021 or Tamil Nadu State counselling conducted by The Selection Committee, Directorate of Medical Education in NEET 2023. GEMCH, Perundurai functions in a G+3 Storied Academic Block, opened in 1993. There are excellent facilities provided by the college which include Spacious Classrooms, Lecture halls & Demonstration rooms, fully equipped Clinical Laboratories as well as Museums. The College also has separate blocks for Animal House, Mortuary and Post-mortem studies. It has Separate Auditorium and Examination Hall Building. Also, an ATM Facility is available at the entrance of the College. Additionally the college has Hostels, one each for Boys and Girls, Staff Quarters, a Well stocked Library, Pre & Para Clinics and Hospital.
Nursing
The School of Nursing attached to Erode Medical College was started in the year of 2008 with an annual intake of 20 students. It functions in the Old RTS Hospital Buildings. In 2019 the intake has been increased to 60 seats.
DMLT
The Tamil Nadu Directorate of Medical Education has sanctioned 50 seats for the course of Diploma in Medical Laboratory & Technology (DMLT).
The primary aim of GEMCH, Perundurai is to train medical students through a primary healthcare approach with a particular emphasis on health promotion, disease prevention, early detection, diagnosis and disease management including the rehabilitation and social integration of transport workers, their families and rural residents.

IRT Perundurai Medical College offers MBBS, Diploma and Certificate courses for admission. The diploma courses are offered in 6 specializations and the certificated courses are offered in 10 specializations. Admission to MBBS course is done on the basis of entrance exam. The selection Committee of Directorate of Medical Education is responsible for conducting the counselling and admission to the various courses at IRT Perundurai Medical College.
