Government Law College, Karaikudi - GLC - KKD is the 15th Government Law College established in Tamil Nadu. It was founded in 2021 by the Tamil Nadu Government under the leadership of Hon’ble Chief Minister, Mr. M.K. Stalin. The announcement for the creation of the college was made by Hon’ble Minister for Law and Prison Reforms, Mr. S. Ragupathy, during a session in the Tamil Nadu Assembly. Following this, the Law Department of Tamil Nadu issued a Government Order based on a request from the Director of Legal Studies, Chennai. After completing the necessary preliminary tasks, regular classes for the college commenced in a temporary building located within the Alagappa Chettiar Government Engineering & Technology College campus in Karaikudi. The college was formally inaugurated on 19.09.2022 by several distinguished figures. The Government Law College, Karaikudi, operates under the Directorate of Legal Studies, Government of Tamil Nadu, and is affiliated with the Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University, Chennai. The college offers a modernized legal curriculum, emphasizing experimental learning, outcome-based education, and revitalized clinical legal education.

The College is functioning in a temporary building, 19.14 acres of land have been allotted by the Government of Tamil Nadu for the Construction of New Permanent building at Kalanivasal, Trichy main Road, Karaikudi, Tamil Nadu. Karaikudi Railway Station is 2.7 Kms from the College and Tiruchirapalli Airport is 77.5 Kms from the College Campus.

Government Law College, Karaikudi has been accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). GLC -KKD offers a 3-year LL.B. Degree program and a 5-year B.A., LL.B. Degree program, each accommodating 80 students. Currently, three batches of students are enrolled in the college.

Eligibility for the Undergraduate 5 Year B.A., LL.B Course allows candidates who have passed the qualifying examination under 10+2 pattern with not less than 45% of marks which is recognized by the syndicate as equivalent to Higher Secondary Examination of the Government of Tamil Nadu, are eligible for admission.For S.C./S.T. candidates concession of 5% marks in the minimum of marks required for admission for B.L. 5 year Degree Course of study as prescribed in the regulations will be given.

Eligibility for the Undergraduate 3 Year LL.B Course is allowed for candidates who have passed a Three year Degree Examination of Universities in Tamil Nadu and Such degree awarded by Member Universities of Association of Indian Universities, New Delhi for purpose of mutual recognition on reciprocal basis, after 10+2+3+ or 11+1+3 pattern and also recognized by Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University alone are eligible for admission to B.L. (3 years) Degree Course.

Scholarships are available for all students meeting the eligibility norms as per specific G.O issued by the Govt of Tamil Nadu. ​Government Law College, Karaikudi, established in 2022, is currently operating from a temporary campus at Alagappa Chettiar Government Engineering College. The permanent campus is under development, with construction plans including classrooms and faculty rooms at an estimated cost of ₹58 crore.As the college is in its early stages, comprehensive details about campus facilities are limited. Once the permanent campus is completed, it is expected to offer standard amenities such as a library, moot court hall, computer lab, hostel accommodations, and sports facilities.
