The college was established by the Government of Tamil Nadu under the guidance of the Directorate of Legal Studies and the affiliation of the Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar University Government Law College Villupuram has been guided by a distinguished line of prominent legal minds, including former Principals who have steered the institution towards academic excellence. Government Law College, Villupuram is located opposite to The Chennai Silks, Villupuram. The College started in the year 2017 and in the year 2019, new campus was inaugurated and it stood as a pioneer of legal education and the pride of Viluppuram city. The college initially operated from a rented building, laying the foundation for its future growth. In 2019, a momentous occasion marked the inauguration of its permanent campus, a testament to the college’s unwavering commitment to providing a world-class learning environment. This modern facility, spread across 1.93 hectares,GLCT offers 2 Undergraduate Courses - a 5 Year B.A, LL.B and a 3 Year LL.B It also has 1 Postgraduate Course, which is a 2 Year Full Time LL.M Course.

Eligibility for the Undergraduate 5 Year B.A., LL.B Course allows candidates who have passed the qualifying examination under 10+2 pattern with not less than 45% of marks which is recognized by the syndicate as equivalent to Higher Secondary Examination of the Government of Tamil Nadu, are eligible for admission.For S.C./S.T. candidates concession of 5% marks in the minimum of marks required for admission for B.L. 5 year Degree Course of study as prescribed in the regulations will be given.

Eligibility for the Undergraduate 3 Year LL.B Course is allowed for candidates who have passed a Three year Degree Examination of Universities in Tamil Nadu and Such degree awarded by Member Universities of Association of Indian Universities, New Delhi for purpose of mutual recognition on reciprocal basis, after 10+2+3+ or 11+1+3 pattern and also recognized by Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University alone are eligible for admission to B.L. (3 years) Degree Course.

Eligibility for the Postgraduate, LL.M Course is eligible for candidate who has passed the B.L. Degree Examination and has secured not less than 50% of the aggregate marks in all the Three Years of the Three Year B.L. Degree Course or in all Five Years of the Five Year B.L. Degree Course together, as the case may be, shall be eligible to apply for the M.L. Degree Course. However a relaxation of 5% is given to the candidates belong in to SC/ST communities.
