Government Medical College, The Nilgiris, a premier Institute in higher education, is situated in Ooty, Tamil Nadu. Former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu K Palaniswami laid the foundation stone of The Nilgiris Government Medical College and Hospital in Udagamandalam on 10 July 2020 through video conferencing.  The project was to be completed within a span of 18 months, the construction cost for which was jointly borne by the Union Government and the State Government. However, there was a delay in building the infrastructure of the medical college.  On12 January 2023, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated 11 medical colleges across the State of Tamil Nadu including The Nilgiri Government Medical College and Hospital.  The opening ceremony, was also attended by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin. The college started functioning from the academic year 2021–2022. 

The Government Medical College, The Nilgiris is in the Udhagamandalam (Ooty) city in The Nilgiris district of Tamil Nadu. The city belongs to the Nilgiri mountains range.  The campus is spread over a total area of 40 acres, including 25 acres of land in Indu Nagar, Ooty and 15 acres of land in its adjoining areas.  Located amidst the greenery in the lush Blue Mountains, the college campus, which is one of its kinds in the country, has a beautiful ambience for a peaceful education.

 The GMC, The Nilgiris is affiliated with Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University and is recognized by the National Medical Commission (NMC).   The Counselling Conducted Authority is the Directorate of Medical Education (DME), Tamil Nadu.

Government Medical College,The Nilgiris is a well-known institution for MBBS course. It undertakes education and training of 150 students in Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) stream every year at affordable fees, which increase accessibility and allow aspiring medical students the opportunity to gain knowledge and skills in their chosen field.  The course is available in Full Time mode. These programs are delivered by highly experienced faculty. The course curriculum imparts comprehensive medical knowledge and practical skills to students, preparing them to become competent doctors. The college follows the National Medical Commission (NMC) guidelines and syllabus. The Accepted Entrance Exam is NEET.

Admission Procedure

Admission to the MBBS program at Government Medical College, The Nilgiris, is based on NEET scores and the subsequent counseling process conducted by the Tamil Nadu Medical Selection Committee. Candidates must qualify in the NEET exam and register online on the DME Tamil Nadu website to participate in the counseling.

Admission Process

• Admission is based on Tamil Nadu NEET counselling for state quota and by MCC (Medical Counselling Committee) for All India quota. Register on the college’s official admission portal, creating a username and password. Provide scanned copies of required documents as per specifications (photo, signature, educational certificates, etc.).

Eligiblity

• You must qualify the NEET‑UG exam and secure the minimum qualifying score.

• For state quota (85%) seats, you must be a native of Tamil Nadu, having studied continuously from Grade 6 to 12 within the state. Proper documentation like nativity certificates and school records are required. Non‑native TN residents are not eligible for the state quota. 

• All India quota (15%) seats are open to candidates from any stat
