Government Medical College, Virudhunagar  was established in the year 2021 and started functioning from January 2022. College building was inaugurated by our Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi on 13^th January 2022.

The recently instituted Government Medical College, Virudhunagar, located in the Collectorate Master Plan Complex, Koorakundu village, is a new jewel in the crown of Virudhunagar district. The college and hospital buildings, which sprawl over 22.4 acres and 15.07 acres respectively, have ultra modern and futuristic infrastructure built at a cost of Rs.380 crores, to cater to the needs of students and patients. As an eco friendly initiative, bio fencing with tree plantations has been executed in the entire college campus.

Government Medical College, Virudhunagar is affiliated with The Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University, Chennai and is Approved by the National Medical Commission (NMC).

The GMC, Virudhunagar,  offers undergraduate courses in Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS). The duration of the course is five and a half years, which includes a one-year internship. Sanction has been given for admission of 150 M.B.B.S students for every academic year by the National Medical Commission, New Delhi from the year 2021-2022.

GMC, Virudhunagar is equipped with modern facilities and infrastructure, including well-equipped laboratories, lecture halls, a very well-stocked Central library, air-conditioned Auditorium, modern Gymnasium Separate Hostels for Boys & Girls, Staff Quarters and Sports facilities. The faculty members are highly qualified and experienced in their respective fields.

In Virudhunagar, the Government Medical College Hospital, departments such as General Medicine, General Surgery, Paediatrics, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Orthopaedics, Ophthalmology, ENT, Anaesthesia, Dermatology, Respiratory Medicine, Psychiatry, Radio Diagnosis, Dentistry and Emergency Medicine are functioning.  Additionally it also has Anatomy, Physiology, Pathology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Community Medicine and Forensic Medicine are functioning.  Laboratories are functioning in the departments of Microbiology, Biochemistry and Pathology.  In Forensic Medicine Department, approximately 360 postmortems are performed every year.

In GMC, Virudhunagar highly sophisticated medical equipments such as CT Scan, Ultra Sonogram, E.C.G, Holter monitor, X-Ray, Endoscopy, Mammogram, ECHO, EEG, Bronchoscope, etc.  are available.  It also provides Central Laboratory and Blood Bank facilities. MRI Scan and Master Checkup can be availed her.

In this Medical College Hospital, various Projects/Centres like Integrated Counselling and Testing Centre (ICTC), Revised National Tuberculosis Control Project (RNTCP), National Leprosy Eradication Project (NLEP), Anti Retiro Viral Therapy (ART) for HIV testing, etc. are functioning. Transport facilities such as Ambulance and Mortuary Van are also readily available here. A special ward has now been set up and qualified Medical Officers have also been entrusted with the treatment for the patients affected by Dengue fever.  A special ward has been located in the new building for various treatments under Chief Minister Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme (CMCHIS). Transgender clinic is being conducted for the benefit of transgender people.

Admission Procedure

Admission to Government Medical College, Virudhunagar for the MBBS program is based on the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) score, followed by state-level counseling conducted by the Tamil Nadu State Medical Education Authority

Placement

Government Medical College, Virudhunagar offers placements in the form of internships with a stipend of Rs. 23,000 per month. After completing the MBBS program, graduates can pursue positions in Primary Health Centers (PHC) with salaries around Rs. 50,000 per month. Further career advancement, particularly after postgraduate studies, can lead to significantly higher earnings. The college also provides career support through a placement cell that assists with internships, job readiness, and training in communication and aptitude.
