About
Government
Medical College and Hospital in Thiruvannamalai, Tamil Nadu,
has a significant history rooted in the region’s healthcare development.
Originally established as a Taluk hospital in 1950, it underwent a major
transformation over the years. In 1989, it was upgraded to a district
headquarters hospital following the formation of the Tiruvannamalai
Samburavayar District. The pivotal moment came on April 1, 2012, when the
hospital was transferred to the Department of Medical Education, marking the
beginning of its evolution into a medical college. By 2013, the institution formally
launched as the Government Tiruvannamalai Medical College and Hospital (GTMCH),
offering undergraduate medical education with an intake of 100 MBBS students in
its first batch.
The medical college is located in a sprawling 35-acre campus in Vengikkal New Town, Thiruvannamalai. It offers a range of modern facilities, including spacious classrooms, well-equipped laboratories, and departmental museums. Students also have access to a large auditorium, hostels for both boys and girls, and sports facilities. The college’s library is another key resource, housing over 7,500 medical books and numerous journals, alongside computer labs and an e-library for enhanced learning. The attached 440-bed hospital serves the community by providing comprehensive healthcare services, including emergency care, operation theatres, ICUs, and specialized units such as blood and eye banks.
GTMCH is affiliated with the Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University in Chennai and is recognized by the National Medical Commission (NMC). It offers a six-year MBBS program, with 100 students admitted annually. The medical college continues to play a vital role in medical education and healthcare services in the region.

The college has an annual intake of 100 MBBS students. To be eligible for admission, candidates must have completed their 10+2 education with at least 50% marks in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology, and must qualify in the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET-UG). Admissions are conducted through the Tamil Nadu NEET UG counselling process, with 85% of seats reserved under the state quota and 15% allotted through the All India Quota.
In addition to the MBBS course, GTMCH offers several postgraduate (PG) programs in various medical specialties. These include the Master of Surgery (MS) in General Surgery with an annual intake of 8 students, and Doctor of Medicine (MD) courses in General Medicine, Paediatrics, Anaesthesiology, and Obstetrics & Gynaecology. The MD programs generally have 4 to 6 seats each, and the duration of all PG programs is 3 years. Admission to these courses requires an MBBS degree and a valid NEET-PG score, followed by counselling through the Tamil Nadu state PG medical admission process.
The college’s comprehensive academic offerings and admission processes are regulated by the Tamil Nadu Directorate of Medical Education and affiliated with the Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University.
