Dr. V. Subrahmanyan an eminent scientist and former director of CSIR - Central Food Technological Research Institute, Mysore, started Paddy Processing Research Centre (PPRC) in 1967 with the aim of providing solutions to farmers in the preservation of high moisture paddy. Considering the need of R & D efforts in the post-harvest processing, preservation and value addition of raw agricultural produce, the Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MoFPI) upgraded the PPRC and renamed it as Indian Institute of Crop Processing Technology (IICPT) in February 2008. Apart from R&D activities, IICPT started offering academic and research programmes in the field of food processing technology from the year 2009. Since the scope of the institute widened from post-harvest processing to value addition of agricultural produce, it was renamed as Indian Institute of Food Processing Technology in March 2017. The institute is located at Thanjavur, TN,  the ancient capital of Chola Dynasty. IIFPT has well equipped laboratories and engaged in the R&D of post- harvest technologies, food processing, value addition, by-product utilization, processes and products development.

 

In February 2019, the National Institutes of Food Technology Entrepreneurship and Management Bill, 2019,  was introduced in the Rajya Sabha. The bill aimed at granting Institute of National Importance (INI) status to IIFPT, Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu and National Institute of Food Technology Entrepreneurship and Management (NIFTEM), Sonipat, Haryana, thus granting them more financial and academic autonomy. The bill was passed by the Rajya Sabha on 15 March 2021 and by the Lok Sabha on 26 July 2021, The National Institutes of Food Technology, Entrepreneurship and Management Act, 2021 was published in the Gazette of India on 30 July 2021 and the name of IIFPT has been changed to National Institute of Food Technology, Entrepreneurship and Management-Thanjavur (NIFTEM-T).

National Institute of Food Technology, Entrepreneurship and Management, Thanjavur (NIFTEM-T), formerly Indian Institute of Food Processing Technology (IIFPT), is an academic institution with Institute of National Importance (INI) status, functioning under the Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MoFPI), Government of India located at Thanjavur , Tamil Nadu.

The institute offers academic and research programmes in the field of food processing technology. The institute has National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL) accredited food quality testing laboratory which is also notified Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) Referral Food Laboratory. Food product development laboratory, food microbiology laboratory, post harvest pest management laboratory, food processing incubation center, Central Instrumentation Laboratory and food engineering laboratories are in its main campus at Thanjavur.  

NIFTEM-T is operating liaison offices at Guwahati, Assam and Bathinda, Punjab. These liaison offices have facilities to give skill development trainings, incubation and consultancy services to the farmers, entrepreneurs and students in the field of value addition of agricultural produce and food processing technologies.

The Institute offers Full Time Degree courses including UG i.e B.Tech. (Food Technology) and PG i.e M.Tech.  (Food Process Technology).  These programs are delivered by highly experienced faculty who ensure that the students gain expertise in the fields of Food Technology.  Most importantly, these courses with 100 seats are imparted at affordable fees, which increase accessibility and allow students the opportunity to gain knowledge and skills in their chosen field.

 

Indian Institute of Food Processing Technology (IIFPT), Thanjavur is one of the Top-Ranked Engineering Institute in Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu. It is an Autonomous Institute and its courses are approved by the AICTE & INI.

The beautiful,15 acre IIFPT campus has separate hostels for women and men with nicely provided rooms and prepared with modern facilities, studying rooms, tv, and tune rooms. The hostel messes offer nutritionally balanced, healthful, and engaging food. Hostel existence at IIFPT is a combination of a laugh and learning. For the sake of undertaking video games like carom board, badminton, football, and cricket are available.

The institute has wonderful sports activities and undertaking facilities on campus, with committed centers for table tennis, volleyball, foot, and ball badminton. Students take part frequently in Inter-Collegiate, Inter-University, and State Level Tournaments and feature gained laurels for IIFPT.

To undertake basic, applied and adoptive research in post-production sector of cyclone/storm prone areas and wetlands, also including plantation, spices and other important crops.

Mandates
Gaining an increased understanding of living organisms with a view to increasing its application in the grain industry.
Basic, applied and adoptive research and development in post harvest processing, preservation and value addition of cereal grains, pulses, millets and oil seeds, and crops of wetlands and storm prone regions, including plantation, spices and other important crops.
Research and development for creating environment friendly methods of utilizing the vast biomass in the country and food industrial wastes for increased economic returns of the producers and processors.
Education and training for creating strong human resource capacities for the food processing industry and academic institutions in the country.
Training for upgrading the skills of academicians, research students and food processing entrepreneurs and manpower for promoting growth of new food industry and entrepreneurship in the country.
Consultancy to existing food industries or for creation of new food industries for better performance, efficient functioning, and for by-product and waste utilization and effective effluent management.
Act as a National Institute for the information generation and flow on post harvest processing, preservation and value addition of foods and to create linkages with related industries, academic and R&D Institutions across the country and around the world, and
Analytical services to food industries and research institutes for testing the food and other organic samples and providing reports on the proximate and ultimate compositions.

IIFPT application process 2022 will have many steps such as registration, filling of the form, uploading documents, payment of application fee, and submission of the form. On the basis of the marks secured by the candidates in JEE Main 2022, the authorities will prepare the merit list of IIFPT admission 2022.

Placements: Almost 80% of the placements are offered in campus placements. The highest salary package offered is 7 LPA, and the minimum salary package offered is 3.5 LPA. Top recruiting companies of our college are Nestle and Aachi Masala.

Loan/ Scholarship Provisions: IICPT offers Graduate Research Assistantships (GRA) for eligible M. Tech students of around Rs. 16000/- per month, at least that’s what I recieved and for eligible Ph. D. students receive Doctoral Research Assistantships (DRA) of Rs. 24000/- per month depending on the funds available in the R&D funded projects.
