The Indian Institute of Handloom Technology (IIHT) Salem operates under the administrative control of the Office of the Development Commissioner for Handlooms, Ministry of Textiles, Government of India. The institute is situated on a sprawling 40-acre campus, known as Foulke’s Compound, which is surrounded by lush greenery. Foulke’s Compound has a rich history spanning 218 years, dating back to the era of the British Imperialism's Commercial Residency and continuing to the present day. In 1957, the All India Handloom Board was established under the leadership of Mrs. Pupul Jayakar, the then Honorary Advisor for Handlooms. The board introduced a scheme aimed at the technological advancement of handlooms and the training of skilled personnel for the handloom industry. As part of this initiative, it was decided to set up two Institutes of Handloom Technology, one in the South and another in the North, to meet the growing needs of the industry.The Textile Institute in Washermanpet, Chennai, previously under the control of the Madras Government, was relocated to Salem with its staff and equipment and re-established as the Indian Institute of Handloom Technology in 1960. The Salem Institute was formally inaugurated on 11th October 1960 by Shri K. Kamaraj, the then Hon'ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. The year 1975 marked a significant milestone for the handloom industry and the institute itself. It was during this year, starting on 1st July 1975, that the Prime Minister’s 20-Point Economic Programme was launched, which included a focus on the development of the handloom industry. As a result, several initiatives for the advancement of the industry were introduced, including the establishment of a dedicated Office of the Development Commissioner for Handlooms at Udyog Bhavan, New Delhi.
Since its inception in 1960, the institute has been offering a Diploma in Handloom and Textile Technology. In the academic year 2015-16, the institute introduced a new undergraduate program, the B.Tech in Handloom & Textile Technology, which is approved by AICTE, New Delhi, and affiliated with Anna University, Chennai. This unique B.Tech course is the only one of its kind offered in India by this institution.The Institute is located at Foulke's Compound, Thillai Nagar, Salem, Tamil Nadu.
Courses offered are a Four Year Under Graduate B.Tech Course in Handlooms and Textile Technology, a Diploma Program which gives a Diploma in Handlooms and Textile Technology and Skill Development Programs for Handloom Entrepreneurs.
The Qualifying Exam and Eligibility for the 4-Year B.Tech Programme is a pass in HSC (Academic) or equivalent with minimum average marks of 45% in Maths, Physics and Chemistry put together. Candidates should have a valid score of marks scored in JEE main of corresponding year exam. Total of 30 Seats are available for admission per year.
To be eligible for Diploma Course, candidate should have passed 10th Std or equivalent exam with English as a subject of study.
The Facilities in IIHT include Classrooms, Laboratories, Research Facilities, Library, Auditorium, Faculty Rooms, Central Stores, Security, Placement Office, Common Rooms for Boys & Girls, Cafeteria, Stationary Room and Reprography, Principal's Quarters and Guest House. Activities on the campus National Academic Depository, Vigilance Awareness, Swachha Bharat, Communication Skill Development, Industry - Institution Interaction Cell, NSS etc.

Admission Process
CBSE and other boards have introduced the system of grading in 10th Examination. As such candidate must endorse the proof of details of marks from CBSE/Boards with their application form to enable the Selection Committee to prepare merit list which is prepared on the basis of marks secured in 10th Class examination only. If the mark sheet is not produced, the minimum mark of the grade obtained will only be considered.

To be eligible for admission to first year of Diploma Course in Handlooms & Textile Technology, the candidate should have passed 10th standard or equivalent examination with English as a subject of study.

Admission Process
Apply Counselling TNEA Online, When the candidates produce grade certificate, they have to produce the actual marks also, otherwise only the minimum marks applicable to the grades in the eligible subjects (Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry) will be taken into account.

For minimum eligibility, rounding of marks and normalized marks will also not be considered. Improvement marks will also not be considered. Candidate should have a valid score of marks obtained in JEE main of corresponding year examination.
Placement
Indian Institute of Handloom Technology has full-fledged and well-equipped Entrepreneurship, Training and Placement Cell. This cell is an integral part of our institution. The institute has provided the complete infrastructure for effective functioning of the cell. Idea pitching activities are at the core to boost entrepreneurship environment in the institute. The training & placement cell is keeping strong liaison with reputed industries and organizations to provide placement opportunities and impart industrial training to the students of the institute. The cell also provides the inputs on soft skills, personality development, leadership, motivation and communication skills etc. to the students in order to meet the expectations of the industry. A good number of industries conduct campus placements at the institute. The cell is sensitized to function all through the year towards generating placement and training opportunities for the students. Training activities are organized throughout the year in an effort towards preparing the prospective students for the campus selection programmes.
The objective of the cell is encourage and support students for entrepreneurship and also to make the students aware about the job opportunities and help them get placed. The cell also imparts training to the students to make them employable and to ensure better conversions in the placement drives.

Class rooms are located in highly aerated place and surrounded by the trees. Class Rooms are well furnished and equipped with Computer and LCD Projector. The environment of the Institute is a cluster of minimalistic structure in the midst of the trees shrubs and well laid out a lawn which provides a serene ambience to the campus.English is a language of opportunities and it plays vital role in securing desirable employment. Accuracy and fluency in the use of language are very essential. Technology aided learning has started and playing a significant role in the pursuit of language learning. Our English language lab is equipped with CLARITY English software which enables our students to enrich four essential skills of language learning such as Listening , Speaking , Reading and Writing . The software can be used independently and a self-monitoring feedback system is also available for the users to assess their performance.Textile Testing lab is established with modern electronic textile testing instruments. The students are allowed to work on these instruments individually to carry out testing analysis of data and test result.

- To match and formulate a recipe for a given dyed sample of fabric/yarn/fiber.
- To assess the difference between the dyed sample and the reference sample to match accordingly.
- To evaluate colour strength and colour properties.
- To create the database for colour matching and further reference.
