The institute completed its 100 years in 2019, and we wish to take forward the legacy with rejuvenated vigor and sheer dedication with a commitment to nation building. The Indian Institute of Technology (Banaras Hindu University) Varanasi owes its existence to Bharat Ratna Mahamana Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya, the founder of the first residential University of modern India, Banaras Hindu University (BHU), who could foresee the vital role of technical education in strengthening independent India. Engineering education in BHU started in 1919 with the establishment of Banaras Engineering College (BENCO).

The next stage of development saw the establishment of College of Technology (TECHNO) and College of Mining & Metallurgy (MINMET). In 1968, the erstwhile engineering colleges of BHU, namely BENCO, MINMET, and TECHNO, were merged to form the Institute of Technology (IT-BHU). IT-BHU had been admitting students through the JEE conducted by the IITs since 1972. The erstwhile IT-BHU was ranked consistently amongst the top engineering institutions of the country. IT-BHU became IIT (BHU) Varanasi on June 29, 2012, by an Act of Parliament. Following its conversion to IIT, the Institute has quickly established procedures and practices as per the standards of IITs.

Admission Procedure

IIT BHU offers 98 courses in different disciplines like Pharmacy, Engineering, Science, and Management. IIT BHU courses include B.Tech, M.Tech, B.Tech + M.Tech, M.Pharm, M.Sc, B.Arch, PhD.

Admission Criteria

Admission Process

IIT BHU Admission 2026 is open for various programs, including M.Tech and M.Sc. GATE 2026 Exam is scheduled to be held on Februrary 7, 8, 14, and 15, 2026 for admission to M.Tech. For its flagship program B.Tech, admission is based on JEE Advanced. To be eligible for JEE Advanced, candidates must first qualify in JEE Main, which is held in two sessions. JEE Main 2025 Session 1 Registration is expected to begin by the end of October 2025.

• Based on the score in JEE Advanced, students need to register for JoSAA Counselling.
  
• The seats are allotted based on rank, category, branch preference, and seat intake.
  
• B.Tech CSE is the most competitive branch at IIT BHU with the highest cutoff.
  
• The JEE Advanced Cutoff for B.Tech CSE ranged from 1350 - 1489 for the General category in 2025.
  
• As per the trends, the expected JEE Advanced Cutoff 2026 can fall between 1100 – 1400.
  
• The total intake for B.Tech at IIT BHU is 1102 seats.
  
• IIT BHU B.Tech Fees is INR 8.35 Lakhs for all the specializations.

Eligibility Criteria

• A candidate must have appeared for the Class 12 (or equivalent) examination for the very first time in 2024 or 2025, with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as mandatory subjects.
  
• The aggregate marks for SC, ST, and PwD candidates should be at least 65%.
  
• A candidate can attempt JEE Advanced a maximum of two times in two consecutive years.
