Jagannath Barooah College, Jorhat
About
Jagannath Barooah University, often abbreviated as JBU (also historically known as J.B. College), is a prestigious Public State University located in the city of Jorhat in Assam, India. Originally established on 19 August 1930, the institution began its journey as Upper Assam College before being renamed Jorhat College and finally Jagannath Barooah College in 1938 in honour of Jagannath Barooah, the first graduate of Upper Assam. Its founders and early leaders included eminent scholars such as Prof. Krishna Kanta Handique (founding principal), Prof. Tulsi Narayan Sharma, Jagneswar Sarma, Phanidhar Dutta, Prafulla Pran Changkakati, and Gunagobinda Dutta. In 2023, after more than nine decades of academic service, it was upgraded to a full state university under the Jagannath Barooah University Act, 2023 to further expand higher education in the region.
Located at Barpatra Ali, Jorhat – 785001, Assam, the university occupies an urban campus that blends heritage buildings with modern infrastructure to support academic and research activities. Jorhat itself is a culturally rich city in the Brahmaputra Valley, known for its tea gardens and vibrant academic environment. The campus has expanded over the years to include academic blocks, research laboratories, libraries, student activity centres and other facilities that support a diverse student community.
Jagannath Barooah University is recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under section 2(f) of the UGC Act, ensuring that its degrees are valid for employment and further education in India. It also holds accreditation from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), reflecting its commitment to quality education and institutional standards. Over the years, the institution has earned accolades such as being designated a “College with Potential for Excellence” while still functioning as J.B. College and has been reaccredited with strong grades in past NAAC cycles.
The university houses multiple faculties and departments spanning the arts, sciences, commerce, and professional streams. With departments such as Assamese, English, Economics, Geography, Physics, Chemistry, Commerce, Computer Science, Mathematics, Sociology, Political Science, and many others, JBU provides a broad academic platform for students. Many of these departments also offer postgraduate and research (Ph.D.) programmes, underlining the university’s role in higher learning and scholarship.
Academically, JBU offers a wide array of streams and courses including undergraduate degrees like B.A., B.Sc., B.Com. and BCA, postgraduate programmes in subjects such as Geography, Philosophy, Commerce, Assamese, Political Science, History, Mathematics, Sociology and English, as well as research opportunities at doctoral levels. Admissions to some programmes, particularly the newer Four-Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUGP) under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, are conducted through national or university‑level entrance processes such as CUET. Eligibility criteria vary by course, but generally include completion of relevant qualifying examinations (e.g. 10+2 for UG; bachelor’s degree for PG) with prescribed minimum marks. The university also promotes various scholarships, financial aid schemes, and support for meritorious and economically disadvantaged students through government and institutional programmes (details are announced each academic year).
The infrastructure and facilities at JBU support academic, cultural, and extracurricular growth. The campus offers well‑equipped classrooms, research labs including specialised centres like the Biotechnology Hub and Civil Service Study Centre, libraries, computer facilities, student common areas, sports and recreational spaces, and campus networks. These resources enable students to pursue holistic development alongside their studies.
When it comes to placements, the university/college has taken steps toward career development by engaging with industry and organizing career guidance, soft‑skill training, and placement activities through its placement and career development cell. While JBU is primarily an academic institution focused on strong foundational learning, these initiatives help students prepare for employment, competitive exams, and further education. Placement drives and internship opportunities may vary by department and year.
In conclusion, Jagannath Barooah University stands as one of the oldest and most respected institutions of higher education in Northeast India, evolving from a historic college to a modern state university. Upholding its motto “The light that never fails,” it continues to foster academic excellence, research, cultural enrichment, and social responsibility among its students while adapting to contemporary educational needs.
