Jai Narain Vyas University, formerly known as University of Jodhpur. University of Jodhpurwas established in 1962, and following four Government Colleges of Jodhpur became part of the University.
I. MBM Engineering College (now Faculty of Engineering with 11 Departments),
II. Jaswant College (now Faculty of Commerce & Management Studies with 04 Departments),
III. S.M.K. College (now Faculty of Law and Campus of Institute of Evening Studies and also being used presently for Under graduate teaching of Faculty of Arts. This also houses Coaching Centre for Weaker Sections),
IV. K.N. College for Women (The multi-faculty constituent college of the University).
Shah G.L. Kabra Teacher's Training College also existed as private college at the time of foundation of the University. This is now one of the affiliated colleges of the University. 
Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, the President of India inaugurated the then University of Jodhpur on 24th August, 1962. In his inaugural address the Hon'ble President revered Prof. Radha Krishnan desired and defined the goals and objective "That the young people, who will be educated in this university , will go forward not as prisoners of the past, but as pilgrims of the future; will develop in them a spirit of dedication, a spirit of renunciation, a spirit of whole-hearted, single-minded concentration on the advancement of the knowledge, whether in science or humanities."
This was the only residential University in the State of Rajasthan, catering mainly the needs of students of western Rajasthan (the Marwar). Since, this University is located in the great Indian Thar Desert, its R&D activities centered on heritage, society and challenges of the region. This is the Western most University of the country and imparts education and conducts research in border areas neighboring Pakistan. It is our endeavor to provide education not only to citizens of the Desert/border Districts but also to the wards of Defence/Paramilitary forces and other Organizations which are working in strategically important sectors of the country. 
Jai Narain Vyas University is now a divisional university for western part of the Rajasthan State.

Mission

This University has onus of transforming life of people of western Rajasthan in particular and western part of the country in general through quality education and programs of Socio-Economic and Scientific Development. The University has responsibility to establish high standards of teaching and research. It pledges to promote innovative and interdisciplinary approaches to make education relevant and meaningful. It aims to produce responsible, knowledge-rich citizens who should provide leadership and direction to the society in future. This University strives to play an important role in Industrial and Business Development, Environment awareness and Quality improvement also. The University has the responsibility to study biodiversity, natural resources and cultural-heritage of this area.

The major considerations for this University since its inception have been, to provide quality education in the areas of Social Sciences & Humanities, Languages, Law, & Education. In order to generate highly trained and motivated human resources in the field of Science & Technology and Engineering for providing services to the Western part of the country in particular and the country in general. The faculties have been developed through continuous efforts and through implementation of different types of academic and R &D Programmes to enable them to study and utilize natural and human resources for the development of this part of country. While promoting the faculties serious efforts have been made to provide equal opportunities to weaker sections like SC, ST, Minorities and women. The university has been making efforts to provide access to its resources, manpower and infrastructure to all sections of society.

Western Rajasthan has unique geography, geology, history, culture, heritage and environment, fauna and flora. Efforts have been made in different faculties to incorporate various aspects in the curricula to study these assets of the country and to preserve and promote these for continuous but sustainable development of the society.

The Government of Rajasthan, under the Section 5(2) of the University of Jodhpur Act 1962, permitted admission of the following colleges of Jodhpur to the privileges of this University w.e.f. 14-07-1962.
