Kalasalingam Academy of Research and Education (KARE), was established in 1984 by the Kalasalingam and Anandam Ammal Charities. "Kalvi vallal" Thiru T. Kalasalingam, who was a freedom fighter and a philanthropist was the Founder Chairman.[citation needed] It was granted deemed to be university status in 2006. In November 2017, following a directive by the University Grants Commission (UGC) to drop the "University" from the name, it was renamed as Kalasalingam Academy of Research and Education.
Kalasalingam Academy of Research and Education (KARE), formerly Arulmigu Kalasalingam College of Engineering and Kalasalingam University, is a private deemed to be university located in Krishnankoil near Rajapalayam, 65 km (40 mi) south of Madurai and 10 km (6.2 mi) north of Srivilliputhur, in Madurai-Shenkottah National Highway (NH208). in Tamil Nadu, India. The campus is close to the ancient temple town of Srivilliputhur. Kalasalingam is Located at the pristine foothills of scenic Western Ghats of southern Tamilnadu in a rural setting of Virudhunagar District.
The Institution having been serving the society for 39 long years, caters to the needs of the students from all walks of the society. Kalasalingam offers UG programmes, PG programmes and Ph.D programmes in various disciplines of Engineering, Science, Technology and Humanities. It is the first Institution in India to introduce a special B.Tech programme in engineering for the differently abled (speech and hearing impaired) students.
The Institution has been re-accredited by NAAC with ‘A’ grade with a CGPA of 3.11. Six UG programmes have been accredited by NBA under Tier-1. The Institution continues to do indefatigable work in getting projects and research centers. It has received DST funding to establish the National Center for Advance Research in Discrete Mathematics.KARE has got the state of the art IRC with splendid high end instruments for advanced research in material sciences and life sciences. Multistoried separate hostels with plenty of facilities provide accommodation to thousands of students. The institution has spent exorbitant sum to create a world class swimming pool and indoor auditorium for sports. Furthermore KARE gives utmost importance to Intra-mural and Extra mural activities for the holistic development of the students.Kalasalingam Academy of Research and Education was ranked 39 among engineering colleges by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) in 2022.
About 220 faculty members are with PhD qualifications and International research centre established (some major equipment -Scanning Electron Microscope EVO18 (CARL ZEISS), Energy Dispersive X-ray-Spectrometer Quantax 200 with X Flash® 6130, X-ray diffractometer D8 Advance ECO, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrophotometer IR Tracer 100, Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer AA 7000) by the institute plays a vital role in promoting the research culture among the faculty members and students in the campus which resulted more than 40 sponsored research projects worth of 14.5 Crore are ongoing from the Funding agencies such as DST, ICMR, DRDO, MSME, ATAL and four international research projects in collaboration with Poland, Norway, Malaysia and Thailand and more than 2500 research findings of our faculty members and students are published in the Scopus indexed journals.
This impacted the strong track record of KARE in terms of research collaborations, funding, publications and patents and the constant existence of Kalasalingam in the top lists of SIR (SCIMAGO Institutions Ranking). It has been in the history of Kalasalingam to be recognised and awarded with a unique centre of excellence since the year 2000 – TIFAC CORE sponsored Network engineering, Centre for Advanced Research in Discrete Mathematics (n-CARDMATH) Funded by DST, International Collaborative Project with the Cracow University of Technology for Sustainable Materials, King Mongkut’s University of Technology North Bangkok, Thailand for 3D printed flexible optical fibres using biodegradable PHBV/ Graphene Nanocomposites for Biophotonics applications, Resilient and optimal micro energy-grid (ROME), Universiti Teknologi Petronas Biological Treatment of Hazardous Sludge from Petroleum Refinery Industry shows the involvement of Kalasalingam in developing Science & Technology and Nation Building.
