WELCOME TO KANNADA UNIVERSITY

Kannada University is located near Hampi, an historical place. The very name HAMPI evokes mythological and historical memories. People lived here since the Stone-age as it is evident in the cave paintings left here by the Stone-age people for posterity.

Historically this place has been the abode of many religions – Buddhism, Jainism, Virashaivism, Vaishnavism, Islam and many popular religious cults like Huligemma cult, Galemma cult, Mylaralinga cult, Balabasava cult which exist to this day. This has been an important place for many kingdoms like Hoysalas, Sindhs, Kapilas, not to speak of the Vijayanagara kingdom which originated here and reigned over most part of South India for more than three centuries. Vijayanagara Kingdom has also been the icon of Kannada identity and has inspired the Karnataka unification movement, symbolically representing unified Karnataka. Hampi has also been the abode of many a well-known Kannada poets like Harihara, Raghavanka, Kumaravyasa and Purandaradasa. Hampi is the treasure house of Indian architecture and has been recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Center.

About Kannada University

The Government of Karnataka through the Kannada University Act 1991 established Kannada University, Hampi, in 1991.

The demand for such a University was there in Karnataka since the mid 1980s. The Government of Karnataka established a commission under the chairmanship of Sadashiva Wodeyar to look into the demand. This Committee after consulting various intellectuals, education experts, political thinkers, social activists, literary personalities and representatives of people came out with a report and recommended the establishment of the much-needed Kannada University.

VISION MISSION

Kannada University is established through the Kannada University Act, 1991. University is located in Hampi. Hampi is an important historical site belonging to Vijayanagara Kingdom and is situated in Hosapete Taluk of Bellary District. Vijayanagara Kingdom has been the icon of Kannada identity and has inspired the Karnataka unification movement. In other words Hampi is symbolically representing the unified Karnataka. Besides, Hampi is the treasure house of Indian Architecture and has been recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Center. Founders of Kannada University were not only specific about the location of the university; they had the intention of establishing a unique university – unique in terms of purpose, in terms of language, in terms of definition of knowledge and in terms of jurisdiction.

The primary objective of the University is to conduct multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research on various aspects of Karnataka and Kannada. Other universities produce and impart knowledge in English and this has created a gap between universities and society. In order to bridge this gap university initially produced knowledge in Kannada. However later on University understood that it is not simply a problem of language; rather it is much more complex issue involving theories, methods, concepts and research communities. In the process now we do not confine our definition of knowledge to the definition given by science. We have expanded it to take into account the non-science definition and understanding of knowledge found in our own and other cultures. University doesn’t have a regional and disciplinary jurisdiction unlike other universities. Its research programs break the disciplinary boundaries to create new grounds in knowledge production. All these special features of the university are represented in the below given vision, mission and value framework of the university.

To discover, decipher and preserve manuscripts inscribed on leaves, stone and on other materials.
To develop theory, method, concept and language to meet the research practices of Kannada research community.

Kannada University Admissions

Admissions to the UG courses are based on merit in the qualifying examination. Admissions to the Ph.D courses and the Integrated courses are on the basis of an entrance examination conducted by the university. Candidates will be selected on the basis of rank in the entrance test.

A merit list will be published in both cases. Selected candidates will be called for a personal interview. After that, admission will be given to the candidates.

How to Apply?
Candidates are required to collect the admission form as well as the prospectus by paying a nominal fee.
The filled form should be submitted with the necessary documents on the date set for admission by the university
The forms will be scrutinized thoroughly and the applicants who have scored the highest marks will be short-listed.
The shortlisted candidates are required to give an entrance examination conducted by the university itself.
The candidates who pass the entrance test will be admitted to the university
Depending on the availability of seats, the process will be repeated.

Placements
Kannada University has a placement cell that is highly effective. It assists students in many methods. The placement cell provides guidance on the best career choices that students are contemplating their options or wish to pursue higher education. Additionally, the cell's placement program also offers numerous talks, seminars and other classes to aid students with securing steady employment throughout the recruitment process.

The university also offers 100% placement for all pupils. A few businesses take part in the recruitment campaign every year and offer most lucrative jobs for students with very expensive salaries.

Kannada University Scholarships

SC/ST scholarships: These scholarships are specifically for students belonging to the Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) categories. OBC scholarships: These scholarships are specifically for students belonging to the Other Backward Classes (OBC) category.

Library:
Established in 1992, Kannada University aims to foster studies, research, and development in Kannada language, literature, culture, and related aspects of Karnataka. An essential component for effective academic functioning is a well-equipped library. The success of the university is measured by the quality of its library service, which should not only be quantitatively rich but also qualitatively responsive to academic needs. Akshara Granthalaya is dedicated to achieving these goals, emphasizing the collection, preservation, and dissemination of knowledge.

Recognizing Kannada University library as the heart of the university, its excellence is a key indicator of the institution's overall quality.

Boys Hostel:
Kannada University has constructed separate hostels for SC/ST and backward students, providing accommodation for up to 500 students. The hostels include gym facilities and are managed by the Social Welfare Department of the Karnataka Government, with the building constructed by Kannada University. Solar water heaters, solar power supply, and pure drinking water facilities enhance the hostel's amenities.

Girls Hostels:
Similarly, separate hostels have been built for girls from SC/ST and backward classes at Kannada University. Gym facilities are available, and the hostels are managed by the Social Welfare Department of the university. The building and facilities are provided by the university, including solar water heaters, solar power systems, and pure drinking water. The hostel can accommodate up to 200 girls.

Gym Centre:
The Health and Gym Center at Kannada University, constructed in 2013-14, comprises separate rooms for boys and girls, with bathroom facilities. A Table Tennis court is also available. The center includes rooms for men and women, a separate room for a doctor, a laboratory, and a treatment facility, benefiting hostel students and staff.

Health Centre:
Constructed during 2013-14, the Health Centre at Kannada University has separate health checkup rooms for men and women, equipped with necessary medical tools. A doctor and two caregivers work in the center, providing emergency distribution of medicines when needed.
