Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (KVASU)
Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (KVASU), was established by the Government of Kerala in 2010 to further Education, Research and Extension Services in the field of Veterinary and Animal Sciences. It is a public funded University with headquarters at Wayanad, Kerala. Dr B Ashok, an alumnus of College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences at Mannuthy, is the first Vice-Chancellor of the university. The powers of the University are vested in its authorities – The Management Council and The Board of Management. The territorial jurisdiction of the University extends to the whole of the State of Kerala with 8 constituent colleges under it that are located in different districts such as Mannuthy, Pookode, Thiruvananthapuram, Kolahalamedu, Thiruvazhamkunnu and Thrissur.
KVASU is hence the product of continuous
and genuine pursuit and sustained dream of many a people, who initiated the
efforts since the mid 90’s. The establishment is also the result of the recognition
of the need to advance Animal production sector activities and to widen the
arena of Academic Opportunities, Applied Research and Entrepreneurship in the
field of Animal Health, Production and allied subjects.
The University is headquartered in a beautiful campus spreading over an area of 100 acres on the side of NH-117 on the Kozhikode –Mysore route 60 kilometres from Calicut. KVSAU is located on a picturesque hilltop at Pookode, near Kalpetta in Wayanad District in Kerala State.
KVASU holds recognition from the University Grants Commission (UGC). The University is also a member of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU). KVASU has bagged Kerala Governor’s Emerging Young University three consecutively years (2016-17, 2017-18 and 2018-19). This marks major milestones in path of this young university.
Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University has three faculties housing eight constituent colleges that offer ten UG, PG, Doctoral Degree Programs, Diplomas, PG Diplomas, and Certificate Courses, including B.V.Sc & AH, BTech, BTech, MSc, MTech, MVSc, etc. The university also provides a range of Scholarships, Fellowships, and Assistantships to students across various Degree and Research programs based on merit and financial needs.
Over the last 13 years KVASUhas carried out pioneering work in the areas of Academics, Research, Entrepreneurship and Allied activities. In addition to nurturing of two existent faculties namely Veterinary Sciences and Dairy Technology, the University initiated the Faculty of Poultry Science to promote the Education and Enterprise in the Poultry Sector.
Presently there are eight constituent colleges (a leap from
just 3 colleges in2010) and an Academic Staff College, undertaking Academic,
Research and Extension activities. Moreover
from less than 600 students in 2010, the University has enhanced student
opportunity to around 3000 students at present with an annual intake of 600
students in a portfolio of 40 different academic programs including Distant
Learning Programs.
KVASU has attracted and invested in
more than Rs.400 crores during the past decade in infrastructure, leading to a
rapid and tremendous Institutional Development with state-of-the-art buildings and
complexes. It has five NABL accredited laboratories in the University, which
are equipped with high-tech facilities and high-end equipment, with funding of
EFC from the ICAR. The NABARD RIDF
sponsored Referral, Analytical and Diagnostic Laboratory, is an upcoming
project.
The University has explored productive academic and training
collaborations with reputed academic institutions in India and abroad, most
notably, University of Edinburgh, University of Western Australia, University
of Connecticut, University of Minnesota, Indian Council for Agricultural
Research, etc.
KVASU’s commitment to regular
Recruitment, Promotions, and Faculty Development Programs reflects a proactive
approach to building a strong and knowledgeable teaching staff. Enrolling over 110 Assistant Professors across
thirty different disciplines is a commendable achievement, showcasing a
commitment to diversity and expertise in various fields of study. Furthermore, emphasis
on Faculty Development programs such as Orientation, Refresher courses, and
Management Trainings is crucial for keeping the teaching staff abreast of the
latest developments in their respective fields. This not only enriches the
knowledge and skills of the teachers but also contributes to the overall
academic excellence of the institution.
KVASU has initiated the establishment of
start-ups enabling students to proceed with their schemes. Teaching is focused
on a problem-based-learning approach rather than lecture-centric, with stress
on market driven Education and Skill Development courses. The University has been extending its
activities through various Research Stations, farms, Schools and Research and
Extension Centres located at various parts of Kerala. The Public is offered various services by the
University through these facilities.
The Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University runs a scientific publication ‘Journal of Veterinary and Animal Sciences’ which is publishing original research articles in the field of veterinary and animal sciences and dairy technology.
