About
Madras Veterinary College (MVC), the oldest constituent institution of TANUVAS, was originally established in 1903 at Saidapet, Chennai, as a school for equine treatment. It began with only five students in a temporary setup. As one of the earliest veterinary institutions in India, the college has steadily advanced in reputation and is now regarded as a leading veterinary college both nationally and internationally. Initially named the Government Veterinary Institute, it was launched on 1st October 1903 in a rented space known as Dubbin Hall, comprising five departments, three faculty members, and 20 students. At that time, the college offered a three-year diploma programme known as GMVC.
In 1935, the college became affiliated with the University of Madras and, starting in the academic year 1936-37, began offering the B.V.Sc. degree—the first of its kind in the country. In 1958, the college was elevated to the status of the Southern Regional Centre for Postgraduate Research and Education and introduced the M.V.Sc. degree in various disciplines. In 1969, the college along with certain research stations was combined to form the Directorate of Veterinary Education and Research. By 1976, it became part of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University. Eventually, in 1989, the institution became a constituent of India’s first veterinary university—TANUVAS.
The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) granted accreditation to the college in 2001. It has also been designated as a training centre for APHCA countries. Moreover, the Department of Animal Biotechnology has gained recognition as a Centre of Excellence for Disease Diagnosis. The college has made significant strides in every area—from producing high-quality graduates to enhancing its infrastructure for education, research, and outreach. The B.V.Sc. & A.H. course follows the national syllabus set by the Veterinary Council of India (VCI) since 2001.
