About
Nagaon Medical College and Hospital, also known as NMCH, is a government medical institution located in Nagaon city in the state of Assam, India. It is a government medical college established in the year 2023 by the Government of Assam. As a public institution, it does not operate under a private trust. The main goal of the college is to offer high-quality medical education and improve healthcare services in the central Assam region by training competent doctors to serve in both rural and urban healthcare settings.
The college is located on Laukhowa Road in the Diphalu area of Mohkhuli, Nagaon. It is well connected by road and lies approximately 120 kilometers east of Guwahati. The campus is spread over a spacious area with planned academic blocks, hospital buildings, hostels, and staff quarters. The environment is designed to support learning, healthcare delivery, and residential needs of students and faculty alike. The approach to the campus is easily accessible by local transport and highways.
NMCH is affiliated to Srimanta Sankaradeva University of Health Sciences, Guwahati. It is approved by the National Medical Commission and recognized by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. As the college is newly established, it has not yet been included in national rankings like NIRF, but it is on the path to becoming a key player in medical education in the region.
The college comprises a medical institute with an attached teaching hospital. The academic wing includes basic science departments and preclinical labs, while the hospital covers clinical departments like General Medicine, Surgery, Pediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynecology, and others. The faculty includes experienced professionals dedicated to both teaching and clinical service. The campus also has hostels, libraries, and administrative blocks.
Currently, NMCH offers only the MBBS course at the undergraduate level, with an annual intake of 100 students. Admission is done through the NEET UG entrance examination, and candidates must meet eligibility criteria as per NMC guidelines. Students are admitted through both All India and State Quota counseling. As a government college, the tuition fees are relatively affordable. There is currently no formal scholarship program specific to the institution, but students can apply for central and state scholarships as per eligibility.
The infrastructure at NMCH includes modern lecture halls with smart classrooms, dissection halls, laboratories, library with digital access, separate boys and girls hostels, residential quarters for staff, a fully operational hospital with OPD and emergency services, ICUs, and diagnostic facilities. Sports facilities, recreation areas, and cafeteria services are also available to ensure a holistic student experience.
As of now, formal placement or internship cell functions are still being developed. However, MBBS students at NMCH are required to complete a one-year compulsory rotating internship in the attached hospital, which gives them hands-on clinical exposure. Being a government college, graduates are well-positioned for government job opportunities and further postgraduate studies.
In conclusion, Nagaon Medical College and Hospital is a promising new medical institution in Assam aimed at improving regional healthcare and providing quality medical education. With strong government support, modern infrastructure, and a committed faculty, it offers a valuable opportunity for aspiring medical professionals in the northeastern region of India.
