National College, Tiruchirapalli was founded on 11th June, 1919, thanks to the munificence of the late Diwan Bahadur S.Rm.CT.Pethachi Chettiar, Zamindar of Andipatti and the collective initiative and zeal of Justice T.V.Seshagiri Iyer, Sir.T.Desikachariar, N.D.Subbarama Iyer, Sri.Sivarama Krishna Iyer and a galaxy of social reformers and nationalists. During the initial years, it was only a Second Grade College offering Intermediate courses and was soon upgraded to First Grade College on the 11th of June 1924 with the introduction of undergraduate programmes.

The College functioned in the old Teppakulam campus for nearly four decades from 1919. The shifting of the College campus from Teppakulam to the Junction area began with the acquisition of land in 1957-58. Forty years after its inception, on the 8th of July 1959, the College was shifted to the present campus within easy reach from the railway Junction and the central bus stand on the Tiruchirappalli - Dindigul highway.

The College had the privilege of celebrating its Diamond Jubilee during the year 1980-81, under the presidentship of Hon’ble Shri.R.Venkataraman, the most distinguished alumnus and the then Minister for Finance, Government of India. Later, he became the President of Republic of India. To mark the occasion, a new block named ‘Principal Saranathan Block’ was built. It houses the college library now. The College fondly remembered with gratitude its principal architect and paid rich encomiums to its glorious line of teachers.

The College was first accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) at ‘A’ level in 2005 and Re-Accredited in III Cycle at ‘A+’ Grade in 2016. The University Grants Commission, New Delhi, conferred Autonomous status on the College in 2010. The College has also been conferred the rare distinction of ‘College with Potential for Excellence’ status in 2011. The College has been identified by MHRD, Government of India under Study in India (SII) programme to admit foreign students in various programmes.

The Crest And The Motto

The Crest, the Motto as well as the Verse from Thirukkural, which adorn and express our lives here, but indicate in a large measure what the College represents.

The quotation from Thirukkural reads :

வெள்ளத்தனையமலர்நீட்டம்மாந்தர்தம்

உள்ளத்தனையதுஉயர்வு.

From deep pools rise the long-stalked flowers,

So rise from depth of soul men’s powers.

And the Verse containing the Motto thus:

“Saa Vidyaa Yaa Vimukthayea”

(That alone is knowledge which liberates)

The Crest shows the Sun rising above the waters and helping the Lotus to blossom. The Sun and the Lotus are mystic symbols in our faith, associated with different methods of God-realisation.

All the three, the Crest, the Motto and the Verse from Thirukkural stress the basis of religion for true education. All the best tenets of our religion are implied in these: fearlessness, non-violence, pursuit of Truth, tolerance, and the genius of assimilation.

National College is an autonomous college founded in 1919. It has been reaccredited with A Grade by NAAC and has a score of 3.61 CGPA out of 4.00. It is situated in Tiruchirappalli city of Tamil Nadu.

National College, Tiruchirappalli offers a number of undergraduate, postgraduate, M. Phil and Ph. D courses in the field of Science, Commerce and Management, Arts, Literature and Physical Education. A basket of Diploma and Certificate courses are also offered to the aspiring students.

• The basic eligibility to apply for any UG course is higher secondary pass (10+2).
• The admission to UG courses is taken on the basis of merit list prepared by the College Admissions Committee.

The minimum eligibility is (10+2) pass from any stream from a recognised board or university. A merit list is prepared by the College Admissions Committee to grant admissions to desirous students.

Facilities and Infrastructure:

The following are the facilities offered by the college to cater to the needs and expectations of the students.

Hostel:

The College provides separate hostels for both boys and girls, to maintain privacy. The hostel is large with a huge capacity of 920 students. The boy’s hostel has 560 beds whereas the girl’s hostel has 360 beds.

Library:

The institute has a well-updated and furnished library with 115260 books and 83 Journals, varying between different genres. The library has a study-friendly environment and the books are always available for the students to do self-study.

Labs:

The college has several labs for different departments where all the practical classes are conducted. Among the various labs, the computer lab of the college is mention-worthy. There are five computer labs with a total of 400 systems, to cater to the needs of all the students of the college for their training in Computer-related courses. Cafeteria:
