  The National Institute of Fashion Technology, Chennai, was founded in 1995 by the government. It is a division of NIFT, which was established in 1986 under the Indian government's Ministry of Textiles, Govt. of India. NIFT currently has 18 campuses around India, including NIFT Delhi, NIFT Bengaluru, NIFT Patna, NIFT Gandhinagar, NIFT Hyderabad, and NIFT Kolkata.  NIFT Chennai is approved by the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India and Recognized by AICTE.

  NIFT Chennai, which was established for the Design, Management, and Technology for the International Brand, is a pioneering Institute of Fashion Education in the country and has been in the vanguard of providing professional human resource to the Textile and Apparel industry.  The primary goal of the Institute is to assist the Apparel/Fashion Industry in achieving worldwide industrial competitiveness.

   This Institute offers a four-year bachelor's degree including  B.Des, B.F.Tech, and two-year Master's Programs in M.F.M. and M.FTech in Design, Technology and Management. In addition, the institute provides a two-year UG Diploma in Fashion Fit and Style (FFS) and one-year PG Diplomas in Apparel Production and Merchandising (APM), Omni Channel Retailing, and E-commerce Management (OCREM), and Fashion Entrepreneurship (FE).  The admission is based on the entrance exam. The exams accepted are CAT and GITAM GATT.  The application process is conducted online.  The Degrees awarded by the Institute are recognised worldwide. The Institute confers Degrees to the graduates in the Convocation Ceremony marking the occasion.

   The NIFT certificate is internationally recognized. Students from ENSAIT in France and Swiss Textile College (STC) in Philadelphia and Nottingham visit the campus on a regular basis. In France, ENSAIT is looking for Bachelor of Fashion Technology students. Fashion Institute of Technology in New York, the University of Northampton in the United Kingdom, Saxion University in the Netherlands, the Queensland University of Technology in New Zealand, and AMFI in Amsterdam, among others, have partnered with it.

   NIFT Act 2006 published in the Gazette of India on 14th July, 2006 confers Statutory Status on the Institute allowing it to offer degrees and other honours.. The Act came into effect from 1st April, 2007. The President of India is the 'Visitor' of the Institute under the Act. The Act empowers the Institute to award Degrees and other distinctions. NIFT Chennai is the first institute in India to award its own Degrees in the field of Fashion Education.

  Over the years NIFT has also been working as a knowledge service provider to the Union and State governments in the area of Design development and Positioning of handloom and handicraft.  The National Institute of Fashion Technology was named 19th among the best fashion schools in the world in 2017.  According to India Today Survey, NIFT Chennai  ranked 4th for Fashion Design in 2019, 3rd in 2020, 4th in 2021 and 2022.  Some of the top recruiters that visit the campus for placement are Arvind Lifestyle Brands Ltd, India Connection, Go Go International Bangalore, Celebrity Fashion Ltd, etc.

   Faculty members have extensive industry expertise, and the curriculum has been tailored to satisfy both present and future business expectations.  

   NIFT Chennai has entered into International Collaborations and have Memorandum of Understanding between University of Northampton, UK,  AMFI, Amsterdam,  Fashion Institute of Technology, New York and Queensland University of Technology, New Zealand.

 NIFT National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), Chennai was established in 1995. The fashion institute is under the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India. At present, sixteen NIFT campuses are functioning in different parts of the country. 

  NIFT, Chennai offers B.Des, B.FTech at undergraduate level; M.F.M. and M.FTech at the postgraduate level. Apart from the regular courses, the institute also offers diploma and continuing education certificate courses in fashion management and technology. Applicants who have passed 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics from a recognized board are considered eligible to apply for B.FTech. Admission B.FTech is done on the basis of valid score in GAT (General Ability Test). Admission to B.Des is done on the basis of valid score in CAT (Creative Ability Test), GAT (General Ability Test), followed by Selection test.

  Admission to PG courses such as M.F.M. and M.FTech is done on the basis of valid score in GAT (General Ability Test), followed by Group Discussion and Personal Interview. For PG Diploma course, candidates must have passed 10+2/Intermediate with any degree to be eligible. Admission for diploma and continuing education certificate courses is based on the merit cum personal interview. 5 percent seats are reserved for Persons with disability (Horizontal reservation for PwD, 40% or more disability across all sections SC, ST, OBC, and General).

NIFT Chennai B.Des. Admissions 2024

 NIFT, Chennai offers Bachelor of Design (B.Des) in 6 specializations with total 42 seats in each specialization. Candidates applying for B.Des should pass 10+2. Admission to B.Des granted on the basis of the CAT (Creative Ability Test), GAT (General Ability Test) followed by a Situation test, conducted by NIFT. 

The six specializations are-

B.Des. (Fashion Design)

B.Des. (Accessory Design)

B.Des. (Textile Design)

B.Des. (Knitwear Design)

B.Des. (Fashion Communication)

Eligibility Criteria 

The candidate must have passed 10+2 examination of any recognized board OR

 He must have secured a pass grade in the Senior Secondary School Examination conducted by the    National Open School with a minimum of five subjects. OR

He must hold a 3 or 4 years diploma recognized by AICTE OR

He must have cleared General Certificate Education (GCE) Examination (London/ Cambridge/Sri-Lanka) at the Advanced (A) level/ International Baccalaureate (IB).

  Note- The maximum age limit to apply for the course is 23 years as on 1st October. For candidates of Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe, person with Disability category, there is a relaxation of 5 years.

Selection Criteria

 Candidates need to appear for the Creative Ability Test (CAT) and General Ability Test (GAT). The shortlisted candidates will further have to appear for a Situation Test. In the final merit list, CAT score is assigned 50% weight age, GAT score is assigned 30% weight age while Situation Test is assigned 20% weight age.

GAT (General Ability Test) for B.Des is a written test of a total duration of 120 minutes. It consists of 100 questions divided among several sections namely Quantitative Ability, Communication Ability, English Comprehension, Analytical Ability, General Knowledge and Current Affairs.

NIFT Chennai B.FTech. Admissions 2024

  NIFT, Chennai offers Bachelor of Fashion Technology (B.FTech) in one specialization with a total 42 seats. Candidates applying for B.FTech must have passed 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics as main subjects. Admission to B.FTech granted on the basis of the valid score in GAT test.

Eligibility Criteria

  The candidate must have passed 10+2 examinations of any recognized board with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. OR

  He must hold a 3 or 4 years diploma in any branch of engineering recognized by AICTE. OR

  He must have secured a pass grade in Senior Secondary School Examination conducted by the National Open School with a minimum of five subjects with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.

  He must have cleared General Certificate Education (GCE) Examination (London/ Cambridge/Sri-Lanka) at the Advanced (A) level with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics / International Baccalaureate (IB).

NIFT Chennai PG Admissions 2024

National Institute of Fashion Technology, Chennai provides a Master’s degree in Fashion Management (M.F.M) with 42 seats and Masters in Fashion Technology (M.FTech) with 35 seats.

Eligibility Criteria

  Educational Qualification for MFM:

  Undergraduate Degree in any discipline from any Institute/University recognized by law in India

  Undergraduate Diploma of minimum three years duration from NIFT/NID.

  Educational Qualification for Master’s Programme in Fashion Technology (M.FTech):

  B.FTech. from National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT)

  B.E / B.Tech. from any Institute / University recognized by law in India.

  Selection Criteria

  The candidates need to appear for the GAT Entrance Exam. The shortlisted candidates shall be further called for the GD/ PI rounds. GAT carries a weight age of 70% and GD/ PI score carries a weight age of 30%.

   Note: GAT (General Ability Test) for M.FTech and MFM is a written test of a total duration of 180 minutes and consists of 150 questions divided among several sections namely Quantitative Ability, Communication Ability & English Comprehension, Analytical & Logical Ability, General Knowledge and Current Affairs, Case Study.

NIFT Chennai Diploma Admissions 2024

NIFT Chennai offers Diploma Programmes for a duration 1 to 2 years and PG Diploma Programmes for a duration of 1 year. 

The Diploma program is offered under the following specializations-

  Diploma in Fashion Fit & Style 

  Diploma in Textile CAD

Fashion & Retail Store Operations 

  The PG Diploma is offered with Apparel Production & Merchandising, and Footwear Design & Production Technology.

Eligibility Criteria

Diploma Programme- A pass in 10+2 (12th Standard) in any discipline (or) 3 or 4 years Diploma recognized by AICTE or a State Board of Technical Education. Candidates with 2-3 years of work experience preferable.

Post Graduate Diploma Programme- Undergraduate Degree from any recognized Institute/ University. Candidates with 2-3 years of work experience preferable.

Selection Criteria

Admission to the program will be granted on the basis of merit followed by PI.

Medical Fitness certificate

 NIFT Chennai has not released the placement report for the year 2023. However, as per the annual report 2022, 90% students were placed in various domestic and international industries with good compensation package. A total of 168 industries given opportunities to NIFT students to pursue internship and final year projects.

   According to the Shiksha review, the highest package offered was INR 6 LPA during the recent placement drive. NIFT Chennai students were offered various roles such as Associate Designer, Assistant Designer, Fashion Stylist and many more.

  How are the placements at NIFT Chennai in 2022?

  As per the annual report 2022, NIFT Chennai recorded 90% placement rate with good package. The same has been outlined in the table below:

NIFT Chennai Facilities

There are various types of facilities available at NIFT, Chennai.

Sports: The Institute facilitates indoor and outdoor activities for its students at NIFT. It has an inner and outer courtyard with table tennis, basketball court, badminton court and a gymnasium, cricket playing wicket, etc.

Computer Centre: Computers are available with BroadBand Wi-Fi Internet facilities for the students. It has all updated software related to training and education for the students to nourish their skills and knowledge in the Digital field.

Auditorium: Auditorium has a seating capacity of about 800 in which college fest, cultural, social and economic sessions, and programs are organized by the College.

Labs: Chennai has well-equipped and highly infrastructure labs like Weaving Lab, Dyeing and Printing Lab, Knitting Lab, Leather Design Lab, Accessory Design Lab, Garment Technology Lab, etc

The institute also provides transport for their shopping, work and industrial visit and training.
