National Institute of Technology, Nagaland
About
National Institute of Technology, Nagaland (short: NIT Nagaland or NITN) is a public technical institute and an Institute of National Importance established by the Government of India. It was set up in 2010 (first academic sessions from the permanent campus began in 2012) as part of the Central Government’s expansion of NITs to improve technical education across India. The institute’s purpose is to deliver high-quality undergraduate, postgraduate and research education in engineering, sciences and related disciplines and to serve regional and national technological needs.
NIT Nagaland is located at Chümoukedima near Dimapur (Dimapur district), Nagaland; the postal/administrative address places it in Chümoukedima, Dimapur, Nagaland — PIN 797103. The permanent campus sits on a large hilly tract identified for the institute; sources cite a campus area of roughly ~291 acres, built to combine academic blocks, hostels, a teaching hospital/health centre, sports grounds and green open spaces — the campus approach emphasizes a modern, eco-sensitive hill-campus layout with focus on research, experiential learning and community outreach
NIT Nagaland is an Institute of National Importance under the NIT Act and functions under the Ministry of Education, Government of India. It is approved by the UGC / AICTE framework applicable to NITs and its degrees carry statutory recognition nationwide. The institute submits data to NIRF and appears in national rankings/bands used by the Ministry of Education; in public rank listings it has been placed in the engineering banding used by national ranking exercises. (See institute submissions to NIRF and institute profile pages for details.)
NIT Nagaland is a standalone NIT campus (no separate off-campuses) with academic divisions spread across engineering departments and basic sciences. Core academic units include Departments/Faculties such as Civil Engineering, Computer Science & Engineering, Electrical & Electronics Engineering, Electronics & Communication Engineering, Electronics & Instrumentation Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics and the supporting humanities/management/Mathematics units. The campus hosts central facilities (administration, training & placement cell, central library, health centre, and common labs) that serve these departments.
NIT Nagaland offers multi-level programmes: B.Tech / B.Tech (Hons) in core engineering streams (Civil, CSE, EEE, ECE, EIE, Mechanical), M.Tech specializations (Computer Science, Power Systems, Communication Engineering, VLSI Systems), M.Sc (Physics), and Ph.D. research programmes. Admissions for B.Tech are through JEE (Main) → JoSAA / CSAB counselling (as per NIT seat allocation rules); M.Tech admissions follow GATE and institute/CCMT procedures; M.Sc/PhD follow national entrance / institute tests and interviews as applicable. Eligibility follows standard norms (10+2 with required subjects for UG; qualifying degrees and minimum marks for PG/PhD). NIT Nagaland and central/state schemes also enable students to apply for government scholarships (SC/ST/OBC/EWS/PMSSS etc.) and institute scholarships/merit awards where applicable.
The institute provides core infrastructure expected of NITs: academic blocks with lecture theatres and labs, a central library with print and e-resources, departmental and central research laboratories (including computer and electronics labs), student hostels (separate for men and women), faculty housing, a health centre, canteen/cafeteria, and sports grounds. The campus is IT-enabled with networked computing facilities and supports co-curricular activity spaces (auditorium, seminar halls). The permanent hill campus is developed progressively and includes student support units such as counselling, training & placement cell and an entrepreneurship/career development cell.
Placement activity is coordinated by the Institute Training & Placement Cell. Recent placement cycles (batch-wise statistics published by the institute) show active participation by software and core recruiters. Public placement statistics for the 2023–24 cycle (in institute placement reports) indicate that B.Tech students saw campus offers with a highest package reported around ₹13.95 LPA and an average in the ₹4.2 LPA range (figures vary by year and branch; CSE and related branches typically have higher placement rates). Major recruiters include IT and engineering firms along with national public sector units — refer to the institute’s placement statistics PDFs for year-wise details.
NIT Nagaland is a young but established Institute of National Importance that delivers mainstream engineering education and research in North-East India. Its strengths are modern campus infrastructure, core engineering programmes, focused placement support, and the central NIT governance model that assures national standards. For students from the North-East and across India, NIT Nagaland offers a blend of regional engagement with nationally comparable academic standards and opportunities for research, internships and industry exposure. Prospective applicants should verify the latest seat matrix, fee structure, cutoff ranks and placement reports on the institute website or JoSAA/CCMT portals before applying.
