Affiliation & Approval

The college is an Autonomous Institution affiliated with the University of Madras, Chennai. It is recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and has been re-accredited with an A++ Grade by NAAC (4th Cycle). The institution was granted autonomous status in 2007, allowing it to design its curriculum and conduct examinations while awarding degrees through the University of Madras.

Establishment & Background

Established on 2 July 1951, The New College was founded by the Muslim Educational Association of Southern India (MEASI) with the vision of providing quality higher education, particularly to educationally disadvantaged communities, while welcoming students from all backgrounds. Over the decades, it has grown into one of Chennai's premier autonomous arts and science colleges, offering undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes with a strong emphasis on academic excellence, research, innovation, and holistic development.

The New College is an autonomous, government-aided arts and science college located at Royapettah, Chennai, Tamil Nadu. The New College assists eligible students in availing various Government of Tamil Nadu, Government of India, and institutional scholarship and fellowship schemes. Eligible students can apply for Post-Matric Scholarships for SC, ST, BC, MBC, Minority, Economically Weaker Section (EWS), merit scholarships, and other financial assistance programmes according to eligibility norms. The MEASI management also provides scholarships and fee concessions to economically deserving students.

The New College has a dedicated Career Guidance and Placement Cell that conducts career counselling, aptitude training, communication and soft-skills development, resume-building workshops, mock interviews, competitive examination guidance, internship support, and campus recruitment drives. The placement cell collaborates with companies from IT, banking, finance, commerce, healthcare, biotechnology, manufacturing, retail, education, and service sectors. Students are also encouraged to pursue higher education, entrepreneurship, research, and professional certification programmes.

Students actively participate in NCC, NSS, YRC, clubs, cultural festivals, research projects, extension programmes, workshops, seminars, and community outreach activities, promoting academic excellence and holistic development.

The New College provides separate hostel facilities for boys and girls with a safe and disciplined residential environment. The hostels offer well-furnished rooms, hygienic dining facilities, purified drinking water, Wi-Fi connectivity, study halls, common rooms, recreation facilities, indoor games, resident wardens, CCTV surveillance, and 24×7 security.
