The New College is a government-aided, Autonomous, Arts and Science college affiliated to the University of Madras. It was established in 1951 by the Muslim Association of Southern India (MEASI). The college is re-accredited by NAAC with A++ (CGPA 3.61 out of 4) in the fourth cycle. The college envisions to promote educational and economic equity by helping aspiring and underprivileged youth gain access to quality education and to nurture them into successful model citizens of the country. The vision is implemented through a 5E holistic development approach that strives to elevate, educate, empower, engage the students and enable them to excel in life and career. The institution considers Inclusivity, Student Centredness, Excellence and Leadership Development as its core values.


The college offers 27 UG and 15 PG programmes across arts, science and commerce disciplines. Research leading to the award of Ph.D. is offered in 11 departments of the college. Currently, the college has 313 faculty members and over 6100 students are pursuing higher education in the college. The college has established state-of-the art laboratories, ICT enabled classrooms, seminar Halls, multipurpose auditorium, central library, hostel and sports and games facilities

Courses

Admission Process

ADMISSION PROCEDURE :

 

Students are required to enclose a copy of the address proof (eg: Ration Card/ Voter ID/ Driving Licence/ Passport /Aadhaar Card)

Candidates who have passed CBSE or Higher Secondary Examination (XII Standard) conducted by Boards other than the Tamil Nadu Higher Secondary Board of Education shall be required to produce an ELIGIBILITY CERTIFICATE from the University of Madras.

 

The college DOES NOT COLLECT DONATIONS in any form for admission. The college has not appointed any outside agency or individuals to select students for admission. If anyone approaches you promising admission on payment of money please bring it to the notice of the Principal.

 

Applicants provisionally selected for admission will be intimated by Post. They must present themselves for an interview with the Principal along with their parents/Guardian on the date and the time mentioned in the card. At the time of interview, the student should produce:

Original Transfer Certificate

Conduct Certificate from the Head of the Institution last studied

Mark Statements of Higher Secondary Course or any other qualifying examination in the case of applicants for Undergraduate courses, along with three photo copies of the mark statement.

Eligibility Certificate issued by the Madras University in the case of applicants whose qualifying Examination has to be recognized by the University.

 

Degree Mark Statements and Provisional Certificates in the case of applicants for the Postgraduate courses

One Passport size colour photograph and one Stamp size colour photograph

Demand Draft for the fees to be paid on admission.

Failure to be present for the interview on the specified date with the necessary certificates and DD mentioned above will automatically mean forfeiture of seat.

 

The prescribed fees for the first term should be paid in full at the time of admission. Extension of time for Payment of fees will not be granted. Failure to pay fees on the specified date will lead to forfeiture of seat. Refund of tuition fees to aided course students discontinuing in the first year of the Postgraduate Degree course will be done as per G.O.M.S. No. 2729 dated 17.2.1981. For self-financing courses, fees once paid will not be refunded.

 

The College authorities reserve the right to increase the fees at the commencement of the academic year if they consider it necessary.

The College authorities reserve the right to cancel the admission of a student without returning the fees (1) if there be any discrepancy between the certificates produced and the entries made in the application and (2) if any suppression of facts be discovered. All the applicants and their parents/guardians will be deemed to have agreed to these rules as a precondition to the admission.

 

Candidates seeking admission in Undergraduate Courses should choose any one language under Part-I at the time of admission.

Candidates who choose a language other than Tamil as Part-I Foundation Course and have not studied Tamil language at 10 or +2 level should opt for Basic Tamil (BT) Under Part-IV compulsorily. Candidates who choose a language other than Tamil as Part-I Foundation Course and have studied Tamil language at 10 or +2 level should opt for Advanced Tamil (BT) Under Part-IV compulsorily. Those who have studied Tamil Language either at 10 or +2 level shall choose a Non-Major Elective Under Part–IV.

 

Admission of the students in all courses is subject to the approval of the University of Madras. Students must satisfy themselves that they are eligible for admission. If after admission they are found not eligible, the College cannot be held responsible for it.

 

Candidates will be selected for M.Phil. admission based on their marks in the qualifying examination and marks secured in the Entrance Examination conducted by the college.

 

Application for Ph.D. Programmes should be made through the University of Madras from where the forms can be obtained directly.

Every foreign student seeking admission to the college should hold a regular Student’s long-term visa.

Regret cards will not be sent to those applicants who are not selected for admission.

 

 

Placements

PLACEMENT CELL

The Career Guidance Cell at The New College functions under the direct control and directions of the Principal of the College. A team of Professors nominated by they Principal, work together to guide the students on Career opportunities.

The objective of the cell is to identify the talents available among the students of this College and nurture and harness them further and offer guidance to choose a bright and right career.

The activities of the cell include collecting the database of the students and compiling them for use when needed. The cell facilitates the students to improve their skills to face various competitive exams such as civil service exams conducted by UPSC and TNPSC. The Career Guidance Cell organizes seminars and meetings to encourage the students to plan their future. Above all, the main function of the cell is to invite reputed companies to the campus to conduct campus interviews and find suitable jobs for the skills available among the students.

The cell also facilitates the economically weaker sections of the students of first and second year undergraduate courses to find suitable part time jobs to supplement the family income without affecting the academic pursuit.


Scholarship

SCHOLARSHIP

The following scholarships are available for the students. Students are directed to meet the class counsellor/ scholarship clerk in the office for more details on various scholarships. They are also advised to regularly read the notices regarding scholarships displayed on the Notice Boards.

National merit-cum-means scholarships to students belonging to minority communities A minimum of 50% marks in the qualifying examination is required for applicants. (As the number of scholarships is limited, the selection of eligible candidates may be done on the basis of the marks scored by the applicants in their qualifying examination). This scholarship is available for UG, PG, M.Phil. and Ph.D. courses. Annual income limit: Rs. 1,00,000/-

National Loan Scholarship for UG and PG students belonging to SC and ST. The applicants should have scored minimum of 50% in the qualifying examination. This scholarship is available only for students staying in reputed/approved hostels. Annual income limit: Rs. 1,00,000/-

Scholarship for the physically challenged (i.e., students who are deaf / hearing impaired, visually and, Orthopedically challenged). Annual Income limit: Rs. 1,00,000/-

Residential and non-residential state scholarships for students belonging to SC, ST, and those converted from Hinduism to Christianity: They should be natives of Tamil Nadu or domiciled therein. Annual Income limit: Rs. 2,00,000/- for SC., ST., and Rs. 1,00,000/- for Christian converts.

Pondicherry state Post-Metric scholarship for students who had their school education in the Union Territory of Pondicherry.

Directorate of Tribal Affairs, Government of Manipur, gives Post-Metric scholarships for students from Manipur state.

Administration of the Government of Union Territory of Lakshadweep, Kochi, gives scholarships for students from the Lakshadweep group of Islands.

Directorate of Higher Education, Kohima, Nagaland, gives Post-Metric scholarships for students from Nagaland state.

Students belonging to the family of farmer’s community are eligible for scholarships under Tamil Nadu Agricultural Labourers – Farmer’s Welfare Scheme, offered by the Directorate of Collegiate Education, Tamil Nadu.

Scholarships for Physically challenged students who are natives of Tamil Nadu and whose parents’ income does not exceed Rs. 1,00,000/-.

The Directorate of Collegiate Education, Tamil Nadu, gives scholarship (stipend) to full time Ph.D., scholars from all disciplines.

Ministry of Human Resource Development gives scholarships to students with extraordinary academic achievements in the qualifying examinations (80% and above), through the Directorate of Collegiate Education, Tamil Nadu.

Indian Council of Cultural Relations (ICCR), Government of India, gives scholarships to UG and PG students from Sri Lanka.

Ministry of Labour, Government of India, gives scholarships to the children of Beedi / Mine / Cine workers from Tamil Nadu.

Secondary Grade Teachers Children Scholarship is given to the Children of Secondary Grade Teachers working in Government Recognized Primary and Middle Schools for pursuing M.A., M.Sc., M.Com., M.Ed., ML, M.C.A., M.Phil courses in Tamilnadu. There is no income ceiling limit, but the students should have secured not less than 60% marks in the U.G. Courses. Selection is made on the merit basis.

Scholarships for the first-generation students from backward classes. Annual income limit: Rs. 1,00,000/-. A certificate from the Tahsildar to the effect that there is no graduate in the family has to be produced.

Muslim Educational Association of Southern India (MEASI), the parent body of The New College, awards scholarships to poor and deserving Muslim students pursuing unaided courses in the Day College and all UG and PG course in the Evening College.

Boys Hostel

The college offers separate hostels for boys. The Hostel Committee will consist of the Principal, the Deputy Warden and two Senior Members of the Staff nominated by the Principal.

Girls Hostel

The college offers separate hostels for girls. The New College hostel Committee will consist of the Principal, the Deputy Warden and two Senior Members of the Staff nominated by the Principal.

Library

The New College Library has been emerging as a Knowledge Resource Centre mainly catering to the needs of the Faculty, Administrative Staff, Research Scholars and Students towards accessing information. The Library has been shifted to a spacious and easily accessible area in the new Diamond Jubilee building. Our library is housed in a hall of 18000 sq ft with good infrastructure and ambience. There is a regular subscription to leading Newspapers, Magazines and Journals thereby augmenting the library as a rich source of knowledge.

Sports

Every student of the I-year degree class shall be required to undergo the course of physical training prescribed by the college and his annual attendance and progress certificates shall not be considered complete unless the principal has certified on the report of the director of physical education that the student has satisfactorily undergone the prescribed course in physical training and put in three-fourths of the attendance in addition to the usual course of instruction. No student will be exempted from the course of physical training except such students as may have been declared by the medical officer of the college to be unfit to undergo a course of physical training and approved by the university. However, students who are in N.C.C. and N.S.S. will be exempted
