National Institute of Technology (NIT), Trichy (NITT)

  The National Institute of Technology (NIT), Tiruchirappalli (NIT, Trichy / NITT) is a National Research, Deemed University near the city of Tiruchirappalli in the heart of Tamil Nadu, India. It was founded as Regional Engineering College Tiruchirappalli in 1964 by the Governments of India and Tamil Nadu with a view to catering to the needs of man-power in technology for the Country.  It is under the affiliation of the University of Madras.  The College has subsequently been conferred with autonomy in financial and administrative matters to achieve rapid development.  In 2002, former minister of human resource development Murali Manohar Joshi decided to upgrade the RECs to NITs. At the end of that very same year, Because of this rich experience, the college was granted Deemed University Status in 2003 with the approval of the University Grants Commission (UGC), the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), and the Government of India and was renamed the National Institute of Technology Tiruchirappalli.  In 2007, NITT was registered under the Societies Registration Act XXVII of 1975 and is recognized as an Institute of National Importance by the Government of India under the National Institutes of Technology, Science Education and Research (NITSER) Act, 2007.  It is one of the members of the National Institutes of Technology (NITs) system, a group of premier Centrally Funded Technical Institutes (CFTIs) governed by the Council of NITSER. 

  The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) ranked NIT Trichy first among the NITs for seven years in a row from 2016 to 2022. NIRF also ranked the institute 4 for architecture, 9 for engineering, 35 for management, 22 for research, and 21 overall among the academic institutions in India in 2023. NIT Trichy was titled the "Best Industry-Linked NIT in India" by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) in 2015, and "University of the Year" by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) in 2017.  Globally, NIT Trichy is ranked 1579 by the Center for World University Rankings (CWUR) in 2023, 781–790 by the QS World University Rankings (QS) in 2024, 801–1000 by the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings in 2024, and 1413 by the U.S. News & World Report Best Global University Ranking (USNWR) in 2022-2023.
 

 In Asia, the institute is ranked 301–350 by QS in 2024, 251–300 by THE in 2023 and 450 by USNWR in 2022-2023. Also, the institute was ranked 301–350 in emerging economies by THE in 2022.    

  National Institute of Technology, Trichy is one of the 31 National Institutes of Technology established  by the Government of India. The institute is funded by the Ministry of Education (MoE), Government of India; and focuses exclusively on Engineering, Management, Science, Technology, and Architecture.  

Undergraduate
  The institute awards Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech.) degrees in nine engineering disciplines as well as the Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch.) degree through its architecture discipline. The B.Tech. and B.Arch. degree programmes are four and five years long respectively

Postgraduate
  The institute offers 42 master's programmes, which include 23 programmes leading to Master of Technology (M.Tech.) degrees, 11 programmes in engineering leading to Master of Science (M.S.) by research degrees, 4 programmes in science and computer science leading to Master of Science (M.Sc.) degrees and a programme in architecture, arts, computer applications and business leading to Master of Architecture (M.Arch.), Master of Arts (M.A.), Master of Computer Applications (MCA) and Master of Business Administration (MBA) respectively.

  The institute offers the above UG and PG programs through its 17 academic departments with more than 250 faculty members and 6,000 enrolled students. In addidtion it also offers M.S. (by Research) and Ph. D degrees respectively in all departments. NITT also has a management and architecture school.  NIT Trichy offers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in disciplines spanning Engineering, Science, Arts, Architecture and Management.  It awards more than 2000 degrees annually. 

  Admissions to the undergraduate course is competitive, and done through JEE(Main) through the Central Seat Allocation Board (CSAB). Admission to the post-graduate programs require competitive scores in both GATE and an All India Entrance Exam conducted by the admitting department. The alumni of the institution have excelled in various fields and are well positioned in a number of government and private sectors.

  NITT is located in Thuvakudi, Trichy, 17 km from Trichy Railway Junction and about 22 km from Tiruchurappalli Central Bus stand on the Trichy-Thanjavur Highway.  

  The College campus spans 800 acres (3.2 km2) and is one of the largest academic campuses in India. The main entrance is located on the southern end of the campus, facing National Highway 67. There is one other entrance, popularly called the Staff Gate. The institute's academic facilities are located in the    southern half of the campus; these include the department buildings, laboratories and workshops, lecture halls, computer centres and the central library. The campus has separate buildings for the departments of nine engineering, architecture, management, computer applications, energy and environment engineering.  The hallmark of the campus is the good facilities which caters to the academic and extracurricular interests of the students. The Octagon is the pride of the campus equipped with modern facilities like a CAD/CAM Lab, Local Area Network, High-Speed Internet connection, and other seminar and conference facilities. It is maintained and run by the Computer Support Group (CSG) of the institute. This includes good hostel facilities, Hospital, Post & Telegraph, Telecom Center, fully computerized State Bank of India (SBI) NIT branch with ATM facility, Bookstall, Reprographic Center, Canteen, Swimming pool and Co-op. Stores.  NITT campus has private taxi & auto service too.

  Apart from this, the campus provides ample opportunities for developing extracurricular skills which include NCC, NSS, Students Chapters of IEEE, social clubs, and sports & games. The Alumni of this institution have excelled in various spheres and are positioned very well globally in a number of leading Government, Public Sector & Private Organizations. 

  NITT hosts two intercollegiate fests namely Festember (Cultural) and Pragyan (Technical) and an inter-department fest namely NITT-fest (Cultural) annually. These fests draw students from most colleges of South India and are hugely popular. Apart from this, each department conducts Symposium.  The institute has a student activity centre (SAC) and is the hub for most of the major extra-curricular activities. The SAC building was inaugurated in the year 2012. The dance, music and the National Cadet Corps groups carry out all their activities at the SAC. It also houses the Café Coffee Day restaurant.

  The faculty is inducted through a process of open advertisement throughout the country. The institute is an example of cultural unity with students drawn from most of the states in the country.

  The department of Training and Placement, the marketing division of the institute has these following functions and responsibilities:  

  Nurtures Industry Institute interaction, by organizing and coordinating frequent industrial visits, inplant training and projects of industrial relevance for the students, with the sole aim of zeroing down the hiatus between the industry and the academia.
 Receives and forwards the feedback pertinent to curriculum improvement from the visiting companies to the faculty, to ensure that the curriculum follows the latest industrial trends.
 Helps every student define his/her career interest through individual expert counseling.
 Organizes and coordinates Campus Placement Program, to fulfill its commitment of a job to every aspirant.  

 Over the years, the department has maintained symbiotic, vibrant and purposeful relationship with Industries across the country and as a result, has built up an impressive placement record both in terms of percentage of registered students placed,   as well as the number of companies visiting the campus.
