Periyar Maniammai Institute of Science and Technology, established in 1988 by the Periyar Maniammai Educational and Charitable Society, Chennai is a private Institute headquartered in the town of Vallam in Thanjavur.  It is a unique institution of higher learning and academic excellence, fulfilling the dreams of its Mentor Thanthai Periyar E.V.Ramasamy and and his wife Annai E. V. R. Maniammaiyar to transform students from different parts of India and Abroad into stalwarts, by igniting their hidden talents.

The PMIST campus is located on a land area of 115 acres which once were barren and dry with scarce population in rural area.  The campus, with a built up area of 90,000 sq.m, is eco-friendly, pollution-free, energy-efficient, zero-waste, well-laid, green and clean with an ideal ambience for learning.  The Institution is situated at 10 km west from Thanjavur and 45 km on the east from Tiruchirapalli and is easily accessible by road, rail and air.

The Insitute was started with the approval of All India Council for Technical Education, New Delhi.  It was initially affiliated to Bharathidasan University and later to Anna University, Chennai from 2001.  Since August 17, 2007 it has been functioning as Deemed to be University with the approval of the UGC and Ministry of Human Resources, New Delhi.

At both the UG and PG levels, the Periyar Maniammai Institute of Science and Technology offers a total of 54 courses.  A range of 31 UG-level courses and 23 PG-level courses are available at PMIST, Thanjavur in both full-time and part-time education modes.  Engineering and Architecture, Sciences, Management and Business Administration, Education, Computer Application and IT, Humanities and Arts, Commerce, and Animation and Design are the eight streams in which the PMIST courses are offered. BA, B.Arch, B.Tech, B.Com, B.Com Hons., B.Ed, B.Sc, BCA, BBA, MBA, M.Tech, MCA, M.Sc, MA, and MSW programs are offered at PMIST Thanjavur.  For admission to the courses, the institute has established particular offers scholarships to Students based upon various criteria to further their education qualifying requirements.  Before submitting an application for admission, candidates must be aware of the eligibility requirements. Periyar Maniammai Institute of Science & Technology offers scholarships to Students based upon various criteria to further their educationScholarships for each candidate will be decided based on the marks scored in 12th standard and in JEE or equivalent or PMIST Entrance Test for B.Tech programmes (Up to Rs.1,80,000). For the B.Com, BA, BBA, B.Ed, BSc programmes it will be based on the marks scored in 12th standard and the PMIST Entrance Test. (Up to Rs.15,000) The sanctioned scholarship will be given throughout the programme subject to the conditions that the student should have an all pass and a minimum of 80% attendance in the previous academic year. Facilities Offered @ Periyar Maniammai University, Thanjavur

Periyar Maniammai Institute of Science & Technology emphasizes on total personality development of all students so that they can serve for the advancement of the Nation. Keeping this in mind, training is given to students under National Sports Organization, which include physical fitness activities, martial arts, Games and Sports.

PMU START (Students Taking Active Role Together) group along with CUII organizes various personality and skill development programmes for endorsing placement. The 8 Clubs and 4 Societies organizes different activities and programmes encouraging students extracurricular activities. Concurrent Career Development Programme, In-plant Training, Internship Programme, Open House and Showcasing are the other highlights. Student’s elections are conducted in a democratic way every year to elect student’s representatives. Students are encouraged to involve in ‘Earn While Learn’ scheme. NSS, NCC, YRC, RRC and various society oriented student’s activities are also a part of study which moulds the future professionals.

IT infrastructure has been spread across PMIST connecting 14 buildings with high speed network deployment. The computer network is built on CISCO and DAX switching platform running on 1 GBPS bandwidth. 1500+ IP enabled devices are connected to this fast network. As per the request and demand of PMIST faculty and students to use the network facilities for their research, teaching and learning process the network services are made available for 24/7 across PMIST.

The library is spread over to three floors with an area of 25,902 m2. The library has specialized collections of Books, Journals & Non-book materials are available in Basic Sciences, Engineering and Technology, Biotechnology, Humanities, Social Sciences, and Education.
