Poompuhar College, Melaiyur, Tamil Nadu one of the oldest Government Aded College in the State, established in 1964 has been grooming students for long 54 years. Ever since its inception, it aims towards offering quality education to its students, in accordance with instructions laid down by the University Grants Commission, Of late, the institution is looking forward the second visit by the NAAC Peer Team and Autonomous Peer team for its appraisal of this institution of higher learning. Poompuhar College is located on the southern bank of the river Cavery in the village popularly known as Melaiyur-Poompuhar, in Sirkali Talk of Bay of Bengal in five kilometers, which was once a thriving port city of the ancient Chola Empire. In olden days, the Harbor city witnessed a business hub trade and commerce running the ocean until the Roman Empire. The Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowment Board, Department of the Government of Tamil Nadu established the institution to glorify the greatness of the place by diverting funds from the temples and Religious institutions. His highness Maharaja of Mysore Jayasamaraja Udayar, the Governer of Tamilnadu inaugurated this college on 02.05.1964 has been striving to achieve excellence in higher education and preparing students for facing global requirements in this highly competitive age. The institution inculcates promotion of knowledge and all-round development of youth, to face the challenges of the world. Its aim is to create a complete man endowed with awareness of human rights, value system, culture, scientific temper, competence and creativity among the students.

Our noble institution has been accredited with “B+” Grade as its first assessment at the middle of 2007 and received Autonomous Status in the year of 2009. The IQAC of the College, soon after the first assessment the institution remarkably improved in the academic and administrative activities. It effectively envisages the total quality management in order to build this institution an ideal Centre of higher learning. It supports different awareness programmes, teaching, learning, evaluation, holding Seminars and mobilization funds from various funding agencies in order to proceed research with social relevance, orientation and refresher training for competence building among the staff, constitution of different committees for the development of the institution, leadership activities among the students to put forth their constructive suggestion for the academic development. The quality assurances in every aspect are the paradigm of IQAC. Thus our students have been boldly facing the challenges of life in winning laurels in various fields. The criterion-wise compendium shall be noteworthy for our institution.

Poompuhar in Poompuhar College is a town in Nagapattinam district in the Southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It was once a flourishing ancient port city known as Kaveri poompattinam, which for a while served as the capital of the early Chola kings in Tamilakam. One of the Five Great Epics of Tamil Literature such as Silappathikaram describes elaborately the religion, culture and civilization of this famous town, Poompuhar. Moreover, Poompuhar was a famous sea port with very close commercial contact to western and eastern countries such as Rome and Greek in the ancient year.

In this historical old city, Tamil Nadu, H.R & C.E Administration Department established the college as “Poompuhar College of Oriental Culture” with the inception of B.A., Oriental Culture course to provide higher education to destitute people in the year 1964. The college was affiliated to University of Madras in 1964 and later got affiliated to Bharathidasan University in 1982. Within a very short span of time, the college has earned goodwill, fame and reputation from all its stakeholders for its quality teaching and discipline. The college has undergone for NAAC assessment and accreditation in the year 2007 and has been awarded “B+” grade and there by projected itself distinctly in the field of higher education. Subsequently, the college has got an autonomous status in the year 2009. Now the college is spread over in 5 acres and it has been successfully running with 11 departments out of which 9 departments are offering research programmes. The vision of this college of repute is to become a costal University in near future.

Admission will be made on the basis of single window system.  While the Submission of filled in Application form other than SC/ST students they have to pay the application fee of Rs.50 for UG and Rs.60 for PG.  SC/ST students they can avail one application at free of cost (attested copy of community certificate is a must one).

Placement Experience: The students are allowed to attend campus recruitment from the sixth semester onward. The percentage of students getting placement is moderate. The highest package is 4.5 lakh per annum and the average package is 2.4 lakh per annum.

Loan/ Scholarship Provisions: There are many scholarships available in this college like full fee relaxation for SC/ST students. They should pay examination fees. And minority scholarship for Muslims. And community scholarship for others. These scholarships are not applicable to management students. My annual fee is 27500 and transportation fees are 6000

The main building of the College has college Office, Principal’s Chamber, , and Physics Lab, Staff rooms for each and every department and the Classrooms of each every department are well adjacent to their departments along with Ladies waiting Hall. Class rooms are airy and have capacity to accommodate around 60 students. There are eight laboratories in the College-Physics, Chemistry, Computer Science, Botany, Zoology along with English language lab. Recently out of UGC Fund, we have designed conference Room, LCD projectors with almost all Departments. We have decentralized Departmental Librariesalong with General library with a Reading Room facility. The total number of library books at present is 20000. The library automation work is underway and we shall complete it at the earliest. The library is having one photocopier for students and teachers, make use of that. Besides that there are other facilities like internet connectivity, Photocopiers, Computers with Net facilities, Water Purifier in the main building. We have a huge playground with all facilities.
