Pragjyotishpur Medical College & Hospital, Guwahati
About
Pragjyotishpur Medical College and Hospital, also known as PMCH, is a government-run medical institute located in Guwahati, Assam. It was established in 2025 by the Government of Assam under the initiative to expand access to medical education and healthcare services in the state. PMCH does not operate under a private trust but is part of the public health and education system. The main goal of the institution is to provide quality medical education, train healthcare professionals, and deliver affordable healthcare to the people of Assam, especially to reduce the burden on Gauhati Medical College and Hospital.
The college is situated in Gorabhanga, under the North Guwahati region, in Kamrup district, Assam. The campus spans around 62 acres, providing sufficient space for academic buildings, hospital facilities, and future expansion. It is easily accessible by road and is located close to major transport routes, making it convenient for both students and patients.
PMCH is affiliated with the Srimanta Sankaradeva University of Health Sciences, which is the health sciences university of Assam. It is approved by the National Medical Commission (NMC), ensuring it meets national standards for medical education. The college is recognized by the Government of India. As it has only recently been established, national rankings have not yet been assigned, but its development is being closely watched as part of Assam’s medical education reform.
The PMCH campus includes the main medical college, a fully functional hospital, and supporting academic blocks. Over time, it will also include nursing and paramedical institutions. The faculties cover core areas of medical education, such as Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Pharmacology, Pathology, Microbiology, and clinical departments like Medicine, Surgery, Pediatrics, and more. Each department is headed by qualified professionals and follows modern teaching methods.
The institute currently offers the MBBS course at the undergraduate level with an intake of 50 students per year, starting from the 2025-26 academic session. Admission is based on the NEET-UG entrance examination, and students must meet eligibility criteria set by the NMC. While no official scholarship programs have been declared specifically for PMCH yet, students may be eligible for central or state-sponsored scholarships available to government medical colleges in Assam.
In terms of infrastructure, PMCH is equipped with modern lecture halls, laboratories, library, dissection halls, and hospital wards. The hospital is a 505-bed facility, already running OPD services, and gradually expanding to full indoor services. The college is designed to be a tech-driven and patient-friendly institution, with plans for hostels, staff quarters, and additional amenities under development.
Since the college is newly established, placements or internships are not yet applicable. However, as with other government medical colleges, students will undergo clinical training and internships within the hospital itself, which will prepare them for government or private healthcare roles, postgraduate studies, or public service through exams like UPSC or state PSCs.
In conclusion, Pragjyotishpur Medical College and Hospital is a significant addition to the healthcare and medical education landscape of Assam. With a strong government backing, modern infrastructure, and a clear purpose of improving health services in the region, PMCH is set to become a key player in shaping the next generation of medical professionals in Northeast India.
