About
Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences Kadapa, commonly known as RIMS Kadapa, is a government medical college located in Kadapa, Andhra Pradesh. It was established in 2006 by the Government of Andhra Pradesh, with its foundation laid by Smt. Sonia Gandhi. It operates under the Andhra Pradesh state government, aiming to provide quality medical education and healthcare to underserved regions of the Rayalaseema area. The institution was part of the vision of late Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhar Reddy to improve access to healthcare and medical education in backward districts.
RIMS Kadapa is situated at Putlampally village, about 8 km from Kadapa city. The campus is spread over approximately 210 acres, offering a serene and spacious environment for medical education. Its rural setting provides easy accessibility to the surrounding population for medical services while maintaining a focus on high-quality clinical training.
The college is affiliated with Dr. YSR University of Health Sciences, Vijayawada, and is recognized by the National Medical Commission for its MBBS and postgraduate programs. The dental courses are approved by the Dental Council of India. As a government medical college, it is approved and regulated by central and state health education bodies. It is not featured in major national rankings but holds significance within the state for its service and education quality.
The campus hosts the main medical college offering MBBS and postgraduate MD/MS programs, a Government Dental College offering BDS and MDS, and a College of Nursing. Academic departments span clinical and non-clinical faculties such as General Medicine, Surgery, Anatomy, Biochemistry, Pediatrics, Orthopedics, ENT, and more. Each department is staffed with qualified faculty and supports both teaching and research.
RIMS Kadapa offers undergraduate courses like MBBS and BDS, postgraduate degrees such as MD and MS in various specialties, MDS for dental studies, and diploma courses in paramedical fields. Admission is through NEET-UG and NEET-PG exams. Eligibility includes academic qualifications in science and qualifying NEET cut-offs. Students are eligible for various state and central government scholarships based on merit and financial status.
The institute has well-developed infrastructure including a multi-specialty teaching hospital, super-specialty units, outpatient and inpatient facilities, a digital library, lecture halls, laboratories, hostel accommodations, and faculty housing. Recent additions include new cancer and psychiatric hospital wings. The dental college is equipped with over 240 dental chairs and modern labs.
RIMS Kadapa does not offer formal placements as seen in other professional fields. Medical graduates typically proceed to internships and then take up positions in government or private hospitals, pursue postgraduation, or start private practice. Clinical training during internships prepares students for real-world practice.
RIMS Kadapa plays a crucial role in training future doctors, dentists, and nurses while serving as a major healthcare provider for the region. With a strong government backing, growing facilities, and diverse academic programs, it stands as a vital institution contributing to both public health and medical education in Andhra Pradesh.
