About
Regional Dental College, commonly known as RDC Guwahati, is a government dental institution located in Guwahati, Assam. Established in 1982, it is the first dental college in Northeast India. The institute was founded by the Government of India under the North Eastern Council (NEC) and operates under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. The primary goal of RDC is to promote advanced dental education and serve the oral healthcare needs of the northeastern region of India.
RDC is situated in Bhangagarh, Guwahati, adjacent to the Guwahati Medical College and Hospital, making it easily accessible. The college campus is well-connected by road and public transport and offers a compact and functional environment for students and faculty. The location within the medical hub of Guwahati provides students with exposure to diverse clinical cases and real-time healthcare settings.
The college is affiliated to Srimanta Sankaradeva University of Health Sciences and is recognized by the Dental Council of India (DCI). It is approved by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. The institution maintains a high standard of education and training and is consistently ranked among the top dental colleges in the Northeast for its academic performance and public service.
Regional Dental College operates as a standalone institution with departments across all major dental specialties. The campus hosts various faculties including Oral Surgery, Orthodontics, Prosthodontics, Periodontics, and more. While it does not have multiple colleges under it, RDC functions as a comprehensive center for dental education with its own administrative and academic units.
The college offers courses in the dental stream, namely the Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) and Master of Dental Surgery (MDS). BDS is a five-year program including a one-year internship, while MDS is a three-year postgraduate program with multiple specializations. Admissions to both programs are through national entrance exams — NEET-UG for BDS and NEET-MDS for MDS. Eligibility for BDS includes passing 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. The fee structure is highly subsidized and there are limited scholarships available through government schemes for eligible students.
RDC Guwahati offers a functional and practical infrastructure including lecture halls, well-equipped dental labs, a central library, clinical departments, hostels, and access to GMCH facilities. The college ensures students receive hands-on training through modern equipment and real-time case handling. Other amenities include a canteen, recreational areas, and internet facilities within the campus.
While RDC does not have a dedicated placement cell, its graduates are well-placed in government health services, private practice, further education, or abroad. The reputation of RDC, along with its government affiliation, provides students with strong prospects for professional growth and employment, especially in public health sectors.
In conclusion, Regional Dental College Guwahati stands as a pioneering dental institute in Northeast India, known for its affordability, quality education, and clinical exposure.
