History of College

Salem Sowdeswari College (SSC) was founded in 1975 by Dr. J.K.K. Angappa Chettiar and Amarar Thiru. T.N.K. Govindaraju Chettiar, under the management of Sri Sowdeswari Mahajana Charitable Trust.

SSC was declared open on 14.07.1975 by the Founder Chairman Amarar Thiru. T.N.K. Govindaraju Chettiar, an eminent Philanthropist-Industrialist from Madras and by the Vice Chairman, Secretary and Managing Trustee, Thiru. J.K.K.Angappa Chettiar, another eminent Philanthropist-Industrialist from Komarapalayam.

The foundation stones for the right wing building to accommodate degree courses were laid by his Excellency Thiru.K.K.Shaw, then Governor of Tamilnadu on 17.11.1975. The right wing and left wing buildings were declared open, by the then Chairman Amarar Thiru. T.N.K. Govindaraju Chettiar, under the Presidency of Thiru.J.K.K.Angappa Chettiar, Chairman, Managing Trustee and Secretary on 7.6.1976 and 12.6.1977 respectively. The first floor of the right and left wing buildings and the J.K.Kandasamy Chettiar, Memorial Main Building were declared open by Amarar Dr.Rajah Sir.Muthiah Chettiar, Rajah of Chettinad and pro-chancellor, Annamalai University on 23.6.1978.

Over the years generous grants & donations from members of the society and philanthropists have helped in the c onstruction of  buildings and ancillary infrastructure. SSC obtained recognition from The University Grants Commission, New Delhi in the year 1980. Since then, SSC has been qualified under Sec 2(f) and 12(B) of the UGC Act, being eligible to receive grants from the Central Government of India.

Admission Procedure

Eligibility

Students who have passed Higher Secondary Examination (HSC) under Academic Stream / Senior Secondary Certificate Examination of Central Board (CBSE) or other equivalent examination as recognized by the Periyar University are eligible to join Under Graduate Courses. Choice Based Credit System (CBCS). From the academic year 2008-2009 Periyar University Examinations are being conducted on the basis of CBCS pattern.

Certificates to be Produced at the Time of Admission

·         12th standard mark statements. (Original and Photo copies)

·         Transfer Certificate. (Original and Photo copy)

·         Conduct Certificate from the Head of the Institution last studied (Original)

·         Community Certificate (Original) if the selection is based on Community Quota (not applicable for Open Competition selection)

·         2 passport size photos

·         Prescribed fees

·         Eligibility certificate from the Periyar University for the Candidates who passed qualifying examination other than +2 examinations of Tamil Nadu Higher Secondary / CBSE.

·         Degree Marks Statements (Semester wise original only in case of  PG admission)

·         Provisional certificate from the university  concerned in case of PG admission

Those who do not bring any one of the documents listed above will not be admitted.
Candidate must come along with their parent at the time of admission.

The purpose of the placement policy is to define the overall structure& processes of the placement cell, and to structure the roles &responsibilities of the teams working on this process of placement cell. It ensure that :

Facilities :

Classrooms     

The classrooms are spacious for the student body and provide immense natural lighting through the windows. They maintain a comfortable temperature at all times. There are vents to maintain the air circulation and ventilation. The windows are strategically placed to ensure the minimum of disturbance in the noise and distraction. The classroom safeguards the students against dust, cold, heat, humidity and rain.

Class room with black board, fan, light facility and dual desk facility with good aeration and teaching aids are available for all the classes.

Library     

Salem Sowdeswari College is a treasure house of knowledge & information.  In our library have all subject of books. We have books mainly in Computer, Electronics, and Textile fashion design, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Technical Drawing, Management, and Biotech etc.  It has been playing a very important role in the learning-teaching process and research activity in the College.

Hostel      

The college provides hostel facilities in lush green surroundings with a very pleasant natural atmosphere which is yet another home for the students. The facilities provided for the students make them feel at home during their course of staying in the hostel, which is the prime quality of the institution.

The management provides free hostel to girls which is hygienic and fully furnished. The rooms are safe, secure, clean and airy. Students enjoy delicious, quality and homely vegetarian and non-vegetarian food. Menu is prepared to satisfy the taste of all students. Their stay in the hostel enables them to imbibe a different life style and involve in activities such as yoga, meditation, sports, music etc., suiting to their individual taste and preferences.

Canteen
The Canteen is situated inside the college campus.   For students and teachers alike, the canteen is a welcome break from the routine of lessons. The homely atmosphere and aroma of delicious food permeates the air as they eat, drink and chat. It remains a focal place of the students for rest and refreshment.

Auditorium             

It accommodates 1000 seats and wears an elegant look.

It is avenue for Seminars,Conferences, Workshops, College Day functions, department association functions, cultural events & Meetings etc.

The auditorium of our college is spacious and fully furnished.

Wi-Fi Campus              

The entire campus is Wi-Fi enabled with a high speed internet connection to allow the students and staffs to access the internet no-matter wherever they are. The coverage of Wi-Fi is not only restricted to class rooms but also extends to all the areas including library,Auditorium, canteen  and hostels. All the websites browsed by him/her are regularly monitored.

Transport             

Bus

The College operates many buses to all the important city spots for the benefit of students and staff. The services of the buses are utilized for industrial visits ,educational tour and excursions. Students commute to the institution by college buses free of cost. The institution buses which are made available to the students for commuting not only from various places in the city but also from sub-urban areas.
