The Founder of Seethalakshmi Ramaswami College Padmabhushan Shri. N. Ramaswami Ayyar started Savithri Vidyasala Hindu Girls' Higher Secondary School in the year 1938, with a noble purpose of providing education to girls in the background of Indian tradition and culture. In the year 1951, he decided to set up a women’s institution for higher studies with a view to preserve the environment he created in the high school. Seethalakshmi Ramaswami College came into being with a strength of 11 girls and grew into a full-fledged college in 1956. The Founder’s dream of women empowerment came true in an emphatic fashion recently when Smt.Nirmala Sitharaman, an Economics alumna of the college became the Defence Minister of India in September 2017.

The college which had a humble beginning in 1951 now offers 24 Undergraduate programmes, 15 Postgraduate programmes, 7 M.Phil. programmes, 8 Ph.D. programmes, 1 Community College course (Sericulture), and 5 B.Voc. programmes. The college has been awarded research funds from DBT under Star College Scheme to the tune of 18 lakhs, to strengthen the Undergraduate Life Science programmes (Botany and Zoology) and 1 crore DST-FIST college level category I, comprising all Science departments. The department of Mathematics received 28 lakhs, department of Physics received 38 lakhs and department of Chemistry received 32 lakhs at department level DST-FIST fund.

Seethalakshmi Ramaswami College was one of the first colleges in Tiruchirappalli to opt for autonomous status in the year 1987. This has allowed us to experiment and innovate in curricular aspects. Another first to its credit is that Seethalakshmi Ramaswami College happened to be one of the first 7 colleges in the country to be accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) in 1999. In the most recent assessment by NAAC, the college has been re-accredited with an “A+” grade (4th Cycle) in recognition of its all round academic excellence, research programmes and social outreach activities.

The CGPC was established in the year 1996 at Seethalakshmi Ramaswami College, Tiruchirappalli, which provides Counseling and Guidance to students, arrange campus interviews, provide job market information and necessary inputs to face the interviews. The Placement Cell is committed to carry all possible assistance to its graduates and post-graduates in their efforts to find employment. CGPC plays a major role in shaping up the career goals of students and gear up the skills and enhance the performance of the students to face the emerging challenges. The CGPC operates year round to facilitate contacts between recruiters and graduates. A team of Placement Officers are available to respond to student’s queries and concerns of all kinds regarding training and placement. Central Instrumentation Facility
Central Instrumentation Facility was established with an objective to impart quality education and research in basic Science as well as applied field of Sciences. Seethalakshmi Ramaswami College has earned a reputation of excellence across a range of computer-based disciplines. Srinivasa Computer Centre established in the year 1985 has the State-of-the-art computing facilities. It is the endeavour of the management that every student who enters this portal of higher learning is imparted computer knowledge during the first year of her degree programme. The main objective of the Computer Centre is to provide the best possible and latest computing facilities in a good ambience. The servers which support the LAN also provide Linux environment workstations. Its comprehensive infrastructure includes 5 servers, 253 workstations, and printers spread across 4 labs.

A separate Net lab enables the students to update their knowledge in their respective discipline and beyond. The centre has qualified and experienced technicians and programmers to guide the students in improving their computing skills. High speed Internet facilities are provided to all the departments and across the campus through leased lines.

The facility of internet is connected to Seethalakshmi Ramaswami College via 50 mbps leased line. The internet lab is accessible to all the final year undergraduate, postgraduate students and M.Phil. & Ph.D. research scholars. The hostel students can surf the net till 7.00 p.m. on all days. This facility helps the students to have access to e-journals, online educational portals and to collect necessary information for pursuing research.

E-studio
E-studio has the state-of-the art infrastructure. Faculty members develop inclusive need based e-content lessons. Students of all disciplines benefit from the lessons. Faculty present their digital content like Videos, PPTs etc to help the students grasp concepts quickly.

The library of Seethalakshmi Ramaswami College was incepted in 1951. It is treasure house of resources by disseminating knowledge and information. The library sprawls around an area of 6674 sq.ft. The Library is automated with a digital catalogue of books and documents. The collections in the library include books, national and international journals, standard newspapers and magazines and online e-resources, with a membership in INFLIBNET-NLIST & NDL. The library provides information services, reference services, bibliographic services and reprographic services, and is a power house of knowledge, quenching the academic thirst of users. First Aid-room
The first Aid-room has all the necessary first-aid kit for giving immediate first-Aid treatment to sick and needy students and faculty members. The students with serious illness are immediately taken to any of the nearby hospitals and parents are informed immediately. A doctor also visits the college every day.
