Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Institute of Medical Excellence, Jammu
About
Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Institute of Medical Excellence, often abbreviated as SMVDIME Jammu, is a medical education institute established with the objective of serving the healthcare and medical education needs of Jammu & Kashmir. It was proposed as part of efforts to increase regional medical training capacity and associated with the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board and local government initiatives. The institute’s goal was to provide quality medical training and clinical exposure to future healthcare professionals in the region.
SMVDIME is located in Kakryal, Reasi district, near the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi temple region in the Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir. The campus was planned in a strategic location to serve both urban and rural communities and to integrate academic learning with clinical services for a significant local population. Specific campus size details and layout plans were part of the institution’s initial proposal to regulators, reflecting an integrated medical college and hospital model.
Initially, SMVDIME was granted a Letter of Permission (LoP) by the National Medical Commission (NMC) to start an MBBS program with 50 seats for the 2025-26 academic year. However, in January 2026, the NMC’s Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) revoked this approval and withdrew recognition after surprise inspections found major non-compliance with minimum standards of infrastructure, faculty, and clinical material required to operate a medical college. As of now, the institute does not hold valid NMC approval for MBBS or any other medical degree program.
At the outset, the institute proposed integrated academic blocks alongside an attached teaching hospital to support medical education and clinical training. However, due to the regulatory findings, the planned academic and faculty structures — including pre-clinical, para-clinical, and clinical departments — were deemed insufficient to meet statutory requirements. Consequently, the full academic and clinical campus functions have not been operationalized under recognized medical education standards.
The institute had sought approval to offer the undergraduate MBBS course, with admissions to be based on NEET-UG merit and counseling. Eligibility would normally include passing 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and English and meeting the NEET qualifying criteria. Scholarships, if offered, would typically follow state and central government schemes for eligible students. However, since the NMC withdraws medical course approval, no recognized UG or PG medical courses are presently valid at the institute.
Planned facilities for SMVDIME included academic blocks, lecture halls, laboratories, a medical library, hospital wards, diagnostic services, and residential spaces. In practice, NMC inspections found substantial shortfalls in essential infrastructure, faculty strength, clinical exposure resources, library materials, patient attendance, and other minimum standard requirements that are mandatory under regulatory norms — a key reason for the withdrawal of permission to operate recognized medical courses.
Since the institute currently lacks valid approval to run its MBBS program or any recognized course, it does not have a placement profile in the conventional sense used by medical colleges. In the context of medical education, “placements” typically refer to internships and professional progression after MBBS — but because approved medical training cannot legally continue at the institute, there is no ongoing placement or internship system to evaluate.
Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Institute of Medical Excellence, Jammu, was envisioned as a new medical college intended to expand healthcare education in the Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir. However, in January 2026, the National Medical Commission revoked its permission to conduct an MBBS program after regulatory inspections found serious compliance gaps, and recognition was withdrawn. Students who had begun studies were relocated to other recognised medical colleges via supernumerary seats to safeguard their education. The institute’s original mission remains significant, but its current operational status as a recognised medical education provider is non-functional until full compliance and re-approval are secured.
